The Canners, who succeed the Fairlanes as grand champions, were this year's "A" league representative and ousted the Ringers and the Rockets to gain the final round while the Pepsis eliminated the Noise Makers and Canadian Tire to go into the final round. The champions were led by — Please turn to page 7 Pair tie for early honors Bowling activities were con- cluded for two more groups last week as the Exeter Ladies and the Mixed league staged awards banquets at the local Legion. Both meals were well attended and provided fine conclusions for the present season. On Wednesday night the la- dies took over the hall to pre- sent trophies to this year's top four teams as well as individual awards. The Pin Poppettes won the Windmeyer Trophy as grand champions of the Exeter Ladies Bowling League while the Trail- ers and High Hopes took the "A" and "B" league trophies respectively. The IGA Darlings won the Gert Scott Trophy as Consolation winners. Another highlight of the even- ing was the introduction of the 1965-66 slate of officers by past president marl Dilkes that in- cluded: Mary Holtzman, presi- dent; Anne Prout, vice-presi- dent; Norma Coleman, sec- retary "A" group; Jeanette Lippert, secretary "B" group; Audrey Zachar, treasurer and Ruth Durand, press reporter. After the presentations en- tertainment was provided for the ladies by a band from RCAF Clinton. Over 150 bowlers and guests attended the Mixed banquet at the Legion Hall Saturday night with the Chickens of the Friday night league walking off with two major awards. The Chick- ens received the Friday night championship trophy and also the grand champion trophy while the Cool Cats accepted the Sun- day night champions award. Headtable guests who were introduced by Jim Loader in- cluded: Aub and Grace Farqu- har, Jack and Betty Stoddard, Gerry and Isa Campbell, Jim and Maxine Loader, Bill and Grace Gilfillan, Pete and Ruth Durand, Al and Marg Flynn, Joe Gunn and Miss Markle Rit- chie and Bill and Kaaren Batten. The 1965-66 executive was also introduced at the meal and included: Bill Gilfillan, past- president; Jim Loader, presi- dent; Hugh Wilson, vice-presi- dent; Pete and Ruth Durand, secretaries and Marg Flynn, treasurer. In other presentations, Aub and Grace Farquhar who ear- lier received an electric clock in appreciation from the league, presented 300, 350 and 400 crests to four ladies and one man. Anne Jorgensen with games of 332, 323 and 310, Ruth Durand 381,303, Murdiena Glover 305, Betty Wilson 400 and Pete Bileski with 351 re- ceived crests for their fine games. Vera Stratton of the Sere- naders and Ken McCarter of the Headpins received awards for their improved bowling over last year while Kai and Anne Jorgensen received perfect at- 'tendance awards. Special awards to hard luck bowlers went to Ettie Penhale, Audrey Passmore and Earl Neil. With the hockey season over and the good weather upon us, area athletes are getting the gloves and spikes out of mothballs and are pre- paring to get in shape for the upcoming soft- ball and baseball season that should be getting under way in the district very shortly. Barring another hail storm, both the base- ball and softball diamonds at the Exeter Com- munity Park will be ready for workouts and all players will be able to round themselves into shape and work out the kinks. At the present time it appears that Exe- ter teams will compete in the Huron Lathes' League, the Men's Recreational League better known as the Liniment League with three minor teams competing in their respective WOAA cate- gory. Because of the lack of players it appears the Mohawks who played in the Huron-Perth last year will not operate this year. The popular Ladies' League drew up this year's schedule at a meeting Monday night and will operate with seven teams, two less than last year. Teams from Brucefield, Hensall, Mitchell, Brussels, Goderich, Winthrop and Exeter will compete in this year's league. Exeter Greys' officials are hoping to have a practise soon and are on the lookout for a couple of good pitchers to strengthen the mound corps. Hensall has entered a team in the loop and the Greys will lose a couple of steady players to the new club and therefore they are inviting all younger players to attend the workouts. The Greys will hold a meeting at the Exe- ter Lanes next Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. in order to organize the team and all aspiring players are asked to attend. The men's Rec League contained eight teams last year but at present only three teams are definite starters although the situation could change after tonight's (Thursday) meeting that is being held at the Exeter Lanes at 8:00 p.m. The Exeter Lanes, Legion and Crediton plan to enter teams in the league while the Kinsmen, Hensall, Dashwood and the two RCAF Centralia teams are doubtful. To date only Staff a, Zurich and Walker- ton have indicated that they would enter teams in the Huron-Perth League but it is rumoured that Clinton and Goderich could enter teams to expand the league to five teams. From all indications it appears that the Mohawks will not have a team this year. A cou- ple of key players have moved away and because of summer school, summer employment and va- cations it is believed that there will not be enough players to field a team to play during the summer months. The H-P League held an organizational meeting in Mitchell last night (Wednesday) and are hoping to open their schedule early next month. On the minor ball scene the houseleague teams have already played a couple of games but the other three teams that played against other area towns are not expected to get under way until mid-June. 4 Win league schedule play Shown in the top photo to the left are the winners of the two ladies' leagues during the regular schedule. For the first tournament of the year the golfers were brok- en down into four flights and competition in each flight was quite close for this early in the season. F/S Al Piper and F/L Ross Burns tied with 73's in the Championship Flight, 0-13 handicap, but Piper was de- clared the winner because he started his round with two bird- ies while Burns parred the first hole and birdied the sec- ond. In the A Flight, 13-20 handi- cap, Wally Burton was the win- ner with an 82 while Harold Hinton shot a 94 for second place. F/0 Carl Ross and F. Simmons tied for "B" Flight honours with 95's while Sgt. R. Grant took the C Flight with a 108.
