Although only a "B" team, Exeter entered the higher di- vision when it was the only place left for them in the tour- nament. John Loader, who led the locals in the goal scoring de- partment with three, paced the Exeter club in their first round Sixteen Ontario bantam teams competed at Lucan's Bantam Hockey Tournament last Satur- day with both Exeter and Lucan capturing their respective tit- les. Lucan defeated Ailsa Craig and Zurich to win the D cham- pionship while the Exeter club, under coach Red Loader and manager Gord Baynham, regis- tered close wins over Goderich and Riverside to capture the "A" minor grouping. Teams from Winona and By- ron were victorious in the other two divisions. En route to their "D" flag, the Lucan squad shutout Ailsa Craig 6-0 in the first round and then went on to defeat the Zur- ich club that had skated to a 4-i win over Ilderton in their first round contest. The Lucan club had little trouble with Zurich as they recorded a lopsided 9-1 victory with Larry Laye and Dennis Burt looking after all the Irish scoring. Laye notched five goals for the winners with Burt col- lecting four. Ron Cor rive au scored the lone Zurich goal. Andy Hardy paced Lucan in their first round win over Ailsa Craig with three goals while Dennis Burt scored a pair of tallies and defenseman Larry Laye added a single. By MRS. G. Mike Hoy fired the other Exeter tally with Graham Hern and Barry Baynham picking up assists. Although they were short- handed with regulars Bill Fair- bairn sidelined with a broken hand and Ron Janke confined to bed with the flu, the locals showed lots of desire in sub- duing the strong Riverside squad 2-1 in one of the best played games of the tourney. Exeter held a 2-0 lead at the end of the second period but Riverside fought back gamely to pull to within one goal of the tiring Exeter club. Glen Stire who had played a fine game in Exeter's win over Goderich was equal to the occasion, however, and came up with sever al spectacular stops to keep the Riverside lads off the scoresheet the rest of the way. John Loader scored Exeter's first goal after taking a pass from Graham Hern with Hern notching the winning marker in the second frame. The Winona team who cap- tured the "C" division cham- pionship were declared winners of the H. B. Langford Trophy for their sportsmanship both on and off the ice. In the individual department, defenseman Larry Laye of Lu- can, who scored six goals in STEPPED UP Play in the "A" division of the tourney was very close with every one of the four games being decided by a single goal. Exeter defeated Goderich 3-2 in the first round and then came roll over foes were two men short and Bel- mont were exerting consider- able pressure. The local lads held a 2-0 lead at the end of the second frame but were hard pressed in the last stanza when the Bel- mont crew fought gamely to knot the score. Through McLaugh- lin'S clutch goaltending and his teammates' close checking, the Exeter club was able to hold on for the win. The Lorne Haugh coached squad had little trouble in sub- duing Seaforth on Saturday as they picked up their tenth WOAA victory with an easy 8-1 win. Jim Guenther paced the local attack with three goals while Larry Haugh and John Guenther notched two goals each and Brad Klumpp added a single. Pee wees still The Exeter pee wees picked up two wins in WOAA play last week along with a 2-1 Shamrock League victory over Belmont in Belmont Friday night. The locals defeated Clinton here on Wednesday night and then routed Seaforth by an 8-1 score on Saturday night for their two WOAA triumphs to set their record at 10 wins and one loss in the WOAA, while their Shamrock record stood at 10 wins and one tie. Playoffs in both leagues are scheduled to start shortly. Larry Haugh led the locals in their closely played 2-1 win over Belmont by scoring both Exeter goals while Mike Mc- Laughlin played a stellar game in the Exeter net, particularly in the third period when Exeter Getting a good look These bantam hockey players get down to ice level (uninten- tionally) in an apparent effort to get a closer look at the puck as they competed in the bantam tournament at Lucan, Saturday.
