Council Monday night con-
curred with a resolution from
Newmarket asking the govern-
ment to institute a plan to use
struction costs.
The resolution noted that this
did not necessarily mean the
students' day would have to be
lengthened, although they gave
few suggestions as to what ac-
tion they felt should be imple-
mented to gain more use from
present buildings.
They noted that less than 20
percent of the hours available
were being used at the present,
and that costs were becoming
"prohibitive".
"It sounds reasonable,"
commented Mayor Simmons.
"Reasonably vague," replied
Councillor Wooden.
Reeve Fisher felt the situa-
tion warranted looking into, and
Wooden commented that the
schools could be put to good
use as community centres rath-
er than municipalities building
such extra facilities.
"They could work shifts or
something," the Mayor com-
mented, but concluded that such
decisions would be up to the
school boards.
Council also endorsed a sec-
ond resolution from Newmarket
asking that Ontario Hospital
Services be extended to include
nursing homes.
It was noted that it was a
hardship for some persons if
they had to leave a hospital —
where their insurance covered
them — and had to enter a nurs-
ing home.
"It's an unfortunate situation
for many people," stated Coun-
cillor Delbridge.
Clerk C. V. Pickard said he
thought there was already a plan
to put nursing homes under the
Hospital Services.
Delbridge also said it cost
less to keep people in nursing
homes than in hospitals.
Under the present system,
people fill up hospital beds as
long as possible because they
can not :.feet the expense of
staying in nursing homes.
views but I know this view is
shared by many others. Se-
veral attempts have been made
in past years to form a debat-
ing club but it was never form-
ed. Maybe if there is enough
interest, there will be one in
the fall.
This warm weather is just
what we need with the track
meet just around the corner.
All the athletes have been out
training as the track is dry and
the jumping pits are in fairly
good condition.
This meet also has a division
for cheerleaders and each
school does one cheer and a win-
ner is chosen. Our cheerlead-
ers hope to win this year. The
last time they won was two years
ago.
They are also looking for a
new mascot since the old stuff-
ed panda bear is becoming rath-
er ragged. They are, now in
search of a panther.
Grade 13 examinations com-
mence June 8 and the rest of
the school starts on June 1.
This means there is less than
one month left before we write
and then we're out again for
the holidays.
So start studying now and
enjoy the sunshine later.

Last week some of the stu-
dents suggested change s and
improvements at our school.
One of the students, Arthur
Horrel (12B) thought that a
debating club would be an as-
set and this is what he sug-
gests.
"We should have both a ju-
nior and a senior debating club.
The meetings should be held
weekly so the students would
have a week to do research on
a specified topic.
The advantages of such a club
are many. Students would learn
how to express themselves,
and for many, this proves an
obstacle. They would be able
to give their views on recent
crisis and thereby obtain know-
ledge of modern and current af-
fairs.
During- the debates the stu-
dents would learn to speak more
distinctly and emphatically. It
would enable the student to do
research and then organize all
his ideas. English teachers will
tell you that there are a great
many students who still don't
know how to write a well-or-
ganized paragraph or essay.
A debating club would be in-
teresting and beneficial."

Guides sell cookies at Centralia
Members of the Girl Guides and Brownies swarmed over Huron Park, Saturday, in their annual
cookie sale. One of the first customers was Mrs. W. J. Bracken, who not only bought cookies but
helped organize the event for the girls. The ardent sellers in the photo are Susan Page, a member
of the Brownies, and Pamela McDonald, a Guide. --T-A photo
