ROY CAMPBELL and SOUTH END SERVICE An early spring inspection of the roof is a timely and useful operation, because the rigors of the winter months may have caused damage that would other- wise go unnoticed. ,Slow and unseen leaks are among the principal causes of permanent injury to the roof structure, framing and sills. Long exposure to the sun will often cause a roof to become dry and porous, and sudden tem- perature changes are a factor in the curling of roof shingles. Some of the danger signals to look for are these: Asphalt shingles, that have out- lived their usefulness, will show the first signs of eventual roof. failure by granules washing off, permitting the felt underneath to dry out or crack. Shrinkage will cause old wood shingles to crack and split. In extreme cases, they will curl, allowing sleet and rain to wash under them, thus weakening the undestructure of the roof. When nails begin to pop out, thiT is usually a sign that the wood has rotted around the nail holes. Faulty application and long wear can both contribute to failure of roll roofing. Over the years, the sun dries out this roof- ing and causes blistering and cracking. Look for specific trouble spots around dormer windows and chimney flashings, vent pipes, valleys and gutters and on hip roofs. Recommended by roofing ex- perts is a good metal or felt flashing materials to assure water-tight dormers. It is a good idea to examine chimney areas for any indication of corrosion or separation of the flashing. Although not part of the roof area, gutters and leaders should get the home-owner's attention at roof inspection time. Failure of the gutters is sometimes due to the poor pitch or a stopped-up condition of the leaders. HOLD SECTIONALS TOGETHER Metal hooks and eyes, at- tached to the back of sectional furniture, keep the furniture from sliding apart. Hooks and eyes can be placed in the back side of legs of sofas and cabi- nets. TO MEASURE PIPE • To get the outside diameter of a piece of pipe, tighten a monkey wrench lightly around it. Slide the wrench off without loosening the set of the jaws. The distance between the jaws is an accurate measurement of the diameter of the pipe.
