with Heepeler here Tuesday
night,
Scores thriller
Jimmy Guenther scored thrill-
ing overtime goal with 50 sec-
onds to play to give Exeter pee
wees 5-5 tie with Hespeler.
R was a see.-saw affair all
the way as Exeter held leads
Of 2,0 and 4-2 only to have a
strong-skating Heepeler con-
tingent come right back to tie it
up.
The visitors took a 5-4 lead
midway through the overtime
session on David Bertollo's goal
and it looked as though Exeter
might be eliminated. However,
Guenther's screened blueline
shot into the lower right hand
corner drew the teams back on
even terms.
Ronny Janke and Jim Guen-
ther paced the Exeter attack
With two goals each. The other
came off the stick of Captain
Bruce Fulcher.
David Peace was a two-goal
man for the visitors. Paul
Weens, Keith Chester and David
Bertollo shared the others.
JANKE WAS FLYING
Ron Janke played most of the
game for Exeter. The lanky
winger was the best man on the
ice for both teams.
The entire Exeter team turn-
ed in a "spirited" effort to
stave off elimination. Mike Mc-
Laughlin, Bruce Fulcher, Janke
and Guenther looked particular-
ly sharp.
Ladies hold
draw finals
The first game of the ladies'
play-offs took place Sunday as
Ellen Knight and her Tuesday
squad met Edna Busche's Wed-
nesday foursome.
Knight led 5-0 at the end of
the second end, but Ruche pick.;
ed up three points in the next
two ends to make the score a
closer 5-3. However a big 5-
ender in the 6th for Knight help-
ed to cinch the game and the
final score was 15-3.
Now Knight and her rink of
Lois Hern Jean Snell and Val
Gould will meet the Thursday
winner, Helen Mickle, who skips
the ony undefeated rink in the
draw. On the Busch° rink were
Jean Taylor, Betty Clarke and
011ie Essery.
The following skips led their
rinks to second and third po-
sitions in regular play: on Tues-
day, Kay Elston and Jane Ro-
bertson; on Wednesday, Edith
Boyle and Helen Jermyn; on
Thursday, Lois Ottewell and
Janie McDowell.

Exeter's Peter Lawson turn-

game's winning marker at '7:57.
The lanky centre displayed
some nifty stickharidling to
move into position in front of the
Ridgetown net before he finally
spun around and lifted the puck
into the lower left hand side of
the net. The goal was scored

consequently absorbed a 5-2
beating in the first game.
Only the fine goaltending of
Mike McLaughlin kept the score
at a fairly close margin.
Chris Riddell and Larry

honors for Exeter. Each also
drew an assist on each other's
goal.
Centre Paul Weens, one of
the smoothest skating centres

for Hespeler.
David Peace, Owen Barfoot

A couple of weeks ago we commented on
the importance of.recreation and education go-
ing hand in hand. if administered properly. Un-
doubtedly, each operation has its own problems,
A prime requisite facing "community-spirited"
people today appears on the local recreation
front. And this is the building of a swimming
pool in Exeter,
I have not said much about the importance
of such a project but with an extensive summer
program right around the corner, I think it's
about time I did, Many people have asked my
thoughts on the subject. To make a long story
short, I sincerely feel that a swimming pool is
an absolute necessity for this community.
A. swimming pool is important to any
community which is interested in keeping up
With the times. For the past two years now, water
tests at Riverview Park have not been the best.
In fact, sometimes I wonder how in the world the
water did pass 'the tests. Yes, the tests have been
adequate, but just enough to allow the swimming
program to operate.
It wouldn't surprise this corner in the
least if the department of health put up the "No
Swimming" sign this summer, With about 250
children from Exeter and surrounding townships
participating in swimming classes each year, not
to mention the number that swim there on free
time, we shudder to think of the reaction if
swimming had to be refused. Swimming instruc-
tors and lifeguards have really had their hands
full trying to live up to Canadian swimming reg-
ulations and operate their programs under pres-
ent conditions.
COMMITTEE WORKING TOGETHER
Co-Chairmen Mel Gaiser, Gerry Webb and
the rest of the committee have done a tremen-
dous job to date with the swimming pool cam-
paign. However, more funds are still needed to
put the project over the top. A final all-out drive
is shaping up for the next two weeks, Let's make
sure the drive gets support. Everyone must be
a "community booster" in this project to realize
the goal. With so much ground work laid and so
much money already on hand, there is no turn-
ing back at this point. It is now or never.
TEENAGERS OFFER HELP
Teenagers realize their responsibility to
the community and are ready to help out finan-
cially such as many other organizations have
done or plan to do. Exeter's Teen Town Club plan
to hold a hootenanny while the Adult Square
Dance Club has a benefit dance in mind, just to
name a couple.
The only way enough money can be
raised is if EVERYONE pulls TOGETHER! So,
let's not turn down the canvassers. Let's put the
project over the top. Before long, I'm sure you'll
be glad you did!

Spearheads attack
Centre Mike Cushman has been
a big payoff man for H-Z Com-
bines in their group final series
against Strathroy. To date, the
lanky centreman has collected
six goals and three assists in
three games.
Exeter Legion Bantams dis-
played some real power Tuee-
day night to whip ptidgetown74
in the second game of the home-
and-home.
The victory, coupled with a
2-1 win in Ridgetown, gave
Exeter the series 9-4 on the
round.
Peter Lawson turned in one
of his best games of the sea-
son to spark the Exeter at-
tack with three goals.
Graham Hern was johnny-on-
the- spot for two more while Jim
Hayter and diminutive Barry
Baynham added the others.
Rae Morrell collected two of
the Ridgetown counters. Mau-
rice Shewburg got the other.
LOCALS START EARLY
The game was only 13 sec-
onds old when Graham Horn took
Pete Lawson's pass in front of
the net and deked goaltender
Ed Schmitchen out of his suit
for the initial Exeter tally.
Lawson combined with John
Loader and Hern at 10:05 for
the second goal of the game.
At 15:43, Jimmy Hayter and
Hern set Lawson loose for his
second goal of the period.
Jimmy Hayter, who gave a
standout two-way performance,
capped the first period scoring
at 16:34 on a play with Lawson.
Exeter ran the count to 6-0
by the end of the second.
Barry Baynham and Hern
were the Exeter marksmen this
time. Randy Weber assisted on
Baynham's counter. Lawson and
David Burke helped on the Hern
goal.
Ridgetown got untracked in
the third period but it was too
late.
The visitors got a pair of
goals from Rae Morrell and a
single from Shewburg but the
game was well out of reach by
this time.
Lawson capped his "hat-
trick" at the 5:09 mark when
defenceman David Burke turned
him loose with a clearing pass
down the right boards.
Capture first 2-1
In one of the best played
bantam hockey games ever wit-
nessed, Exeter Legion Bantams
downed Ridgetown 2-1 in the
first game of a home-and-home,
goals-to-count series at Ridge-
town Friday night.
It was a typical OMHA playoff
game, featured by some phen-
ominal goaltending on the part of
Ridgetown's Ed Schmitcher and
Exeter's Glen Stire.
Exeter took a 1-0 first period
lead when pint-sized Barr y
Baynham deflected David Bur-
ke's blueline shot into the net
at the 4:50 mark. John Loader
also drew an assist on the play,
Baynham, who turned in one
of his best games of the season,
was Johnny-on-the-spot for the
goal as he timed Burke's blue-
line shot perfectly.
The two clubs battled through
a scoreless second period but
early in the third, Ridgetown
tied it up.
Bill Pickard combined with
Robert Newcomb and Dave
Cooper for the equalizer as he
polished off a three-way play
from close in.
First game a tie
Exeter Legion Bantams
battled Lambeth to a 2-2 tie in
Exeter Wednesday night in the
first game of the Sha.mrock

Paul Thomas gave the visit-
ing Lambeth club a 1-0 first
period lead with an unassisted
goal at 14:24.
At the five minute mark of
the second period, Dennis War-
ren combined with Reg Thomas
for Lambeth's second goal of
the night.
With Lambeth leading 3-0,
Barry BaynhaM put Exeter back
in the game when he dented the

COMBINES SHOW POWER
Combines put on a spectacu-
lar 60-minute offensive and de-
fensive display before one of
the best crowds of the season.
The winners netted four first
period goals and clinched the
series with three more in the
second.
After Elmira's Grundy put
the visitors ahead 1-0 at the
3:30 mark, Combines took over
by scoring four goals before the
period ended,
Stu O'Neil and Kenny Loft
triggered the first two. Max
O'Neil climaxed the effort with
two of his own.
Barry Hearn added two more
markers to Combines' total in
the second period. Ron Ryan
scored a third to give the locals
a comfortable 7-3 margin with
one period to go.
Despite the fact that Don
Fletcher didn't score any goals,
the big left winger collected
three assists. Defenceman Bev
Urbshott was credited with two
and "Sam" (Storey), Who Was
there again, also assisted on two
scoring plays.
