receive promotions
Sever' pilots and one telecom officer at RCAF Station Cen-
tralia were promoted from pilot officer to flight lieutenant
in the annual air force promotion list for New Year's. Another
pilot received his permanent commission.

Two six-week courses Will
run simultaneously in Exeter
and Hensali, during lent, The
Exeter topic, Christian wor-
ship, runs. Wednesdays from
Feb, 12 to March 18. At Bensall,
Christian prayer will be studied
Thursdays from Feb, 12 to
March 19,
Coarse four, entitled ;Wat-
ches, matches and dispatches",
will discuss church teaching on
baptisms, weddings and funer,
als during April.
The September course is en-
titled, "The other six days",
and the final course, in October
and November, discusses the
"Five makers of the New Tes-
tament".
The rector, J. Philip GandOn,
is in charge of the program,
which is open to all Christians.

James McNalley Hume, 80,
died at South Huron Hospital,
Exeter Thursday, January 2.
He was the son of the late
Mr. and Mrs. James Hume of
Guelph. He was married to the
former Allie Foster and came
to Embro in 1940, They owned
and operated the North Embro
feed mill until retiring in 1950,
He had been a resident of
Exeter for the past seven years
at 252 William St.
Be was a former member of
Knox United Church, Embro,
and of the IOOF Lodge, Embro.
He served with the Canadian
Artillery Brigade in the first
World war receiving his dis-
charge in 1919. He was a for-
mer member of the Royal Ca-
nadian Legion, Embro and of
Exeter.
He is survived by his wife;
one daughter, Mrs. Robert
(Laura) Campbell, Embro, one
son, Donald of Ingersoll, two
half-brothers Donald and Ro-
bert of Guelph, also six grand-
children. He was predeceased
by two sons, Glen and Archie.
Funeral service was held
from the R. W. Johnson funeral
home, Embro, onSaturday, Jan.
4. Rey. H. C. Benson of Knox
United Church officiated. Tem-
porary entombment was in the
Ingersoll Mausoleum with bur-
ial later in the North Embro
cemetery,

Following theinstallation
ceremonies Mrs. Webber was
Chester Mawhinney, who has
given 15 years' service on two
area municipal councils, and his
wife celebrated their go l d en
wedding anniversary Tuesday.
The couple, who have receiv,
ed congratulations from Gover-
nor-General Vanier, Prime
Minister Pearson, and Hon. C.
S. MacNaughton, marked the
occasion with a group of friends
and relatives at the dinner in
the Dufferin Hotel, Centralia.
Mr. Mawhinney has one of the
longer records of service in
Huron county council a total
of 12 years, six as an Exeter
representative and six as a
Stephen township member. He
was deputy-reeve for five years
and reeve for one in Exeter.
On Stephen council, he served
three years as reeve, three as
deputy and three as a councillor.
In addition, Mr. Mawhinney is
a past master of Lebanon For-
est Lodge, AF & AM, and has
served as secretary of the lodge
for 11 years. In the 1920's he
served as secretary of the Cen-
tralia branch of the United Far-
mers of Ontario for about eight
years.
Mr. and Mrs. Mawhinney
were married Jan. 7, 1914, at
the Crediton home of the bride's
parents, Mr, and Mrs. Chris
Fahner. Witnesses were Rus-
sell Schroeder and Mrs. Roy
Finkbeiner.
They settled at the groom's
farm on the Goshen Line, Ste-
phen (often called the Mawhin-
ney Line, too, because of the
number of Mawhinney families
in the area). They moved to
Exeter in 1944.
From 1943 to 1960, Mr, Maw-
hinney was fieldman for the
local plant of Canadian Can-
ners Ltd. The couple are mem-
