The University of London, Eng.,
has conferred upon James L.
Sturgis, son of Mr. and Mrs.
H. L. Sturgis, town, the degree
of master of arts with distinc-
tion. Mr. Sturgis, who has just
returned from two years' study
in England, wrote his thesis on
the nineteenth century reform-
er, John Bright. In September,
he will take up his duties as
head of the history department
at Merritton High School, St.

Several from this district at,
tended the 10th annual memorial
PO decoration service at over
100-year-old Ebenezer •ceme-
tery Con. 4 McOillivray town-
ship. The Rev. C. W. Sacti, pas-
tor of the Ltican and ClandebOYe
churches was guest speaker.
Mr. Thomas Hall of Mt. Carmel,
reeve of McGillivray repre-
sented the township.
About 100 attended from Lon-
don, Kettleby, St. Catharines,
Detroit and Sarnia.
A corner of land was donated
from the farms of Mr. Fischer
and Mr, William Fenton and the
first church was built in 1860.
Prior to that the people met in
the homes and in the school with
the preacher riding horseback
every two weeks from London.
The Ebenezer church is no
longer in existence. The ceme-
tery was restored in 1954 with
a new fence built around it.
BRIDE ELECT FETED
Miss Patricia Carter, Clan-
deboye, whose marriage to John
Albert Brownlee, London takes
place Saturday in Holy Trinity
Anglican Church, Lucan, has
been honored at several pre-
nuptial events.

money at the church.
Mrs. J. W. Roger McKinney,
London, entertained at an after-
noon tea, at The London Hunt
and Country Club, honoring the
bride-elect. Tea was poured by
Mrs. J. A. Brownlee, London,
Mrs. Clarence Carter, Clan-
deboye, Mrs. Harry Hyatt and
Mrs. J. M. Arthur, London.
Following the wedding re-
hearsal the bridal party will
be entertained at a supper party
by the groom elect's grand-
mother, Mrs. J. A. Brownlee
of London.
CHURCH NEWS
On Sunday August 18 Bonnie
Louise, infant daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Elmer Joyce was
baptized at the service in St.
James Church. The sacrament
of Holy Baptism was conducted
by the rector the Rev. E. 0.
Lancaster. Sponsors for the
baptism were the parents and
Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Wade of
London.
Flowers placed in the church
were from the funerals of the
late Mr. Little, Mr. A. G. Jack-
son and Richard Hodgins,

attended the decoration service
on Sunday at St. John's Anglican
Church Arva cemetery. The

ducted the service in the church.
Brenda Lewis of Lucan is
spending this week with her

Mr. and Mrs. Andy Carter
attended the decoration service
in Granton cemetery Sunday
afternoon. The service at the
cemetery was conducted by the
Rev, W. J. Maines pastor of
the Granton UC. Later they
were guests of Mr. and Mrs.
Austin Hobbs of Granton.
PRESENTATION
On Friday evening at the
Lucan Legion Hall friends and
neighbors met to honor Mr. and
Mrs. Wesley Callcott and Danny
who have taken up residence,
and have a service station and
store at the corner of Highways
22 and 7. They were formerly of
Moorseville Where they had a
general store also an egg route.
The Department of Highways
have purchased the store and
dwelling.
Mr. Ken Carter read an ad-
dress of best wishes for their
future. Miss Darlene Boyle
made a presentation of a gift
of money on behalf of the com-
munity. Mrs. Callcott thanked
the committee expressing re-

WOAA opener
Combines drop
Crediton-Centralia Combine s
dropped the first game of their
WOAA Juvenile "C' series to
Durham 7-1 in a contest played
in the northern town Sunday.
The return contest in a best-
of-three series will be played
in Crediton Sunday at 2.30.
Ken Vollett, Durham's ace
hurler and a performer with the
Listowel juniors early in the
year, was a thorn in the side
of the Combines all afternoon.
The young righthander was in
good form, fanning 18 batters.
Durham opened the scoring
in the second with four runs,
the result of three base hits,
two bases on balls and an error.
The only Crediton-Centralia
score came in the fourth when
catcher Terry Seymour drew a
walk and scampered home on
Doug Vaughn's long two-bagger.
Jim Pfaff went all the way on
the Combines hill and turned in
a creditable performance. He
allowed seven hits over the full
route and sent eleven back to
the bench by way of the strike-
out .route while issuing three
free tickets.
Rob Harrington was the other
Combine to pick up a safe hit
off the offerings of Vollett.

Swimming classes at River-
view Park will continue until
the end of August, instructor
John Nagel said this week,
"We'll be teaching some ex-
tras, like drownproofing and the
butterfly stroke," the instruct-
or explained.
Awards night for the swim-
mers will be held Monday, Aug-
ust 26, at the park, beginning at
7:30 pm In addition to presenta-
tions of crests and certificates,
a marshmallow roast will be
held.
MORE PASS TESTS
Swim instructor Nagel has
released another list of young
swimmers who have passed be-
ginner's tests at the park.

Wilf Goodwin was back among
the winners in Saturday's regu-
lar jitney for the second time
in three weeks. This time the
enthusiastic Hensa 11 bowler
teamed with Lila Smith to cap-
ture two wins and a plus of 12.
Two wins plus three enabled
the combo of Fred Tilley and
Bob Middleton to move into
second position.
A single win and a six plus
were garnered by Alvin Pym
and Luther Reynolds, good for
third spot.
Last week a trio of local
bowlers travelled to Goderich to
participate in a District 4 tour-
ney which attracted 18 entries.
Betty and Fred Tilley and
Ross Taylor put up a good show-
ing in the district competition,
placing third.
A goodly number of the mem-
bers of the Exeter club are
expected to journey to St. Marys
tonight, Thursday, to join an
invitational jitney in the cement
town.
The next big event at the local
greens will be a tourney open
to participants from District 4
on the afternoon of September 4.

Ray Smith and Gar Johnston
combined to take top honors in
Tuesday's weekly lawn bowling
activities at the local greens.
The winning pair compiled two
wins and a plus of 13.
Close behind was the trio of
Betty Tilley, Ross Taylor and
Wes Watson with two plus 12.
A duo of Mrs. Ted Pooley
and Ted Chambers gathered two
victories and a five plus to take
third place.
Bret her husband was unable to
attend due to illnesS.
