Five students share honors
in graduating class results
Top honors in this year's
graduating class at HSDHS were
spread among students from
five centres in the South Huron
District,
Janis Gulens, Dashwood, led
the class with an average of
80%, followed by Gail Farquhar,
Exeter, with 76.
Frances Johns, RR 1 Wood-
ham, placed third, a fraction
of a percentage point above
Sharon McBride, Kippen, and
Robert Mickle, Hensall, who
tied for fourth. Frances posted
a mean of '75% and the other
two averaged over '74%.
The class passing average
was 87.1%, one of the better
records in recent years.
Highest subject percentage
was physics in which all of the
14 students passed who tried
the exam. A 92 percentage was
posted in botany, Spanish auth-
ors and composition. English
literature came third with 90%.
Janis Gulens, 18, one of a
family of academic winners at
HSDHS, will qualify for an On-
tario scholarship, worth $400.
He'll also receive the student
council award of $100 for high-
est aggregate marks.

chemistry (84). Brenda Schoch
tied his 81 mark in English
composition.

Gail led in botany (82) and
zoology (84); Frances in Span-
ish composition (78) and Latin
composition (88),
Other subject leaders were:
Pamela Heard, history (85);
Doug Hodgson, physics (82);
Sharon McBride, Latin authors
(86); Marlene King, Spanish
authors (70).
Marlene King, Donna Ventin
and Dale Turvey all scored 77,
the high mark in English litera-
ture. Tied with 81 in algebra
were Kathie Page, Donna Ventin
and Chris Gulens.
French and Latin. The daugh-
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar
McBride, RR 3 Kippen, she
has been a member of rama
and glee clubs, played basket-
ball, is a choir member and
Sunday School teacher at Kip-
pen UC,
Robert Mickle, 19, son of Mr.
and Mrs. E. L. Mickle, Hen-
sail, is an avid stamp collector.
He played on the school's vol-
leyball and basketball teams
and also enjoys baseball and
curling. He plans to enter UWO
this fall, specializing in phy-
sics.
SUBJECT LEADERS
Janis Gulens led the class in
five subjects and tied for top
mark in a seventh. He was high-
est in French authors (82) and
composition (81), geometry
Gulens, who played on basket-
ball and volleyball teams, sang
in the glee club and was a
member of the drama club dur-
ing high school years, also led
his class in grades 12 and 11. He
is the son of Dr. and Mrs. V.
Gulens, Dashwood, both of whom
are doctors.
Gail Farquhar, also 18, plans
to attend teachers' college this
fail. The daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Aub Farquhar, who op-
erate the bowling alley here,
she was a member of the drama
club, played volleyball at South
Huron and was a member of
the majorettes at Clinton col-
legiate, which she attended be-
fore her family moved to Ex-
eter.
A career in secretarial
science is the objective of Fran-
ces Johns, 18-year-old daugh-
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard
Johns, RR 1 Woodham. She
has been a member of the
athletic society executive at
HSDHS, a glee club member
and a cheerleader. She also
was a candidate for s c h oo 1
queen.

enter UWO to study honors

during this week.
There will be Sunday School

at the usual hour. Rev. Hugh
and Mrs. Wilson returned home
from Tobermory last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Oren Grace and
Gerald of Gibraltar, Michigan,
spent a few days last week with
Mr. and Mrs. Almer Passmore.
Darlene Passmore returned
home after having spent a month
with her aunt and uncle.
Mr. and Mrs. William Snow,
Billy, Bobby and Jimmy, Jack
Hodgert, Mrs, Jennie Moore
visited last Sunday with Mr.
and Mrs. Sandy Elliot at their
cottage at Hayfield, Mrs. Moore
remained for a few days.

Mrs. Milton Sleamon of Exeter,
Tommy Parker of London visit-
ed recently with Mr. and Mrs.
William Rohde.

days recently with Mr. and
Mrs. Milton Sleamon of Exeter.
Billy and Diane Caswell of
London are holidaying with their
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Alvin Passmore.
Mr. Lloyd Hackney had his
appendix removed last week in
St. Joseph's Hospital, London.
