nals have taken over first spot
in the Huron Football league.
After losing a game early in
the season the RCAF boys have
been improving every time nut
and moved to the top of the
pack with a 5-1 win over Win-
throp, Wednesday.
Playing on their own field,
the Winthrop squad scored the
first goal of the game at the
12-minute mark to break a Cen-
tralia defensive spell.
This marked the first time
the. Internationals had been sco-
red on in 474 minutes of action

to order by Reeve Heaman who
in a brief address explained
the object of the gathering and
at the same time eulogized the
members of the Women's In-
stitute for their zeal and untir-
ing efforts in bringing the es-
tablishment of the park to such a
successful issue.
"The reeve then asked Mrs.
Hastings, secretary of the Wo-
man's Institute, to christen the
park which she did, giving it
the name "Riverview Park" and
in future this beauty spot will be
known by the suggestive name
given by the ladies.
"The naming of the park
over, interesting addresses
were delivered by Revds. Sharp
and McAlister and Mr. Hurdon.
A, large bonfire was then made
followed by a display of fire-
works, including paper balloon
ascensions and also "TheStor-
ming of the Fort", under the
management of Mr. Hurdon."
The following account of the
christening of the park appea-
red in the July 24 edition of
The Exeter Advocate:
"UNUSUAL INTEREST"
"The christening of the new
town park situated on the south
bank of the river Aux Sable on
Friday night last was an event
of unusual interest. The night
was ideal for such an occasion
and as a result hundreds of
people from town, country and
surrounding villages gathered
on the grounds to witness the
christening ceremony.
"The grounds were beauti-"
fully decorated with Chinese
lanterns, bunting etc. and a
large band stand had been erec-
ted for the occasion. The Exe-
ter band was present and under
the able leadership of Mr. Ed
Treble, discoursed many beau-
tiful and appropriate selections
during the evening.

Exeter Pee Wees dropped
their second game in WOAA play
at the Exeter park Monday.
Goderich youngsters scored
in almost every inning to ad-
minister a 13-3 beating.
The hometown kids scored
single runs in the second, fourth
and sixth.
Glenn Stire's single sent Ran-
dy Weber home from second
after the pitcher had doubled to
open the second.
Stire counted run number two,
drawing a walk and movi ng
around on a fielder's choice
and an error.
The final tally was plated
by Bill Fairbairn as reached
base on a misplay, moved up
on Jim Guenther's walk and
home on a single by Gary Camp-
bell.
Weber threw the seven-inning
distance on the Exeter hill,
whiffing four, while issuing the
same number of free trips to
first.
Sheardown on the Goderich
hill, also walked four and fan-
ned seven.
Grand Bend
Riverview Park is celebra-
ting its fiftieth anniversary this
week by playing host to more
people than ever.
The park, originally estab-
lished by the Exeter Women's
Institute, was christened exact-
ly 50 years ago this month
during a ceremony which inclu-
ded fireworks, balloon "ascen-
sion" and "The Storming of
the Fort".
This year, by accident rather
than design, the park already
has received two gifts to mark
its golden anniversary and a
third is on the way.
The first present was the
addition of more land purchased
jointly by the Ausable authority
and town council. The wisdom
of the move has been shown by
the tremendous crowds the park
has been attracting on summer
weekends.
The second gift is the deve-
lopment plan provided by Exe-
ter Kinsmen to guide the beau-
tification of the area.
The plan incorporates a
swimming pool, which may be
the park's third gift this year
since the pool committee has
decided to proceed with con-
struction this fall.
The park survived one nar-
row escape in order to celebrate
its 50 years. That was 11 years
ago when the campaign for South
Huron Hospital was on. The
park, somewhat neglected at
that time, was chosen as the
first site for the hospital.
Only a few objected to the
site at first, pointing out that
Exeter would need the park
facilities in the future. The
park cause gained strength gra-
dually, however, and the hospi-
tal board gave way to mounting
public opinion.
Since then the park has been
enlarged twice--first by the
purchase of the Frayne pro-
perty, which included the house
in which the Ausable authority
office is now located.
This year, in addition to ac-
quiring more land to the south
of the river, council has en-
larged the land area by filling
in the swamp portion of the
northeast side of the park, which
eventually will be developed for
public use.
