Science instructor G. C.
Koch, who completes 40 years
of teaching this month, has a
handsome new chair in which to
retire but he won't be spending
all his time in it.
The chair was presented to
Mr. Koch and his wife by fellow
HSDHS teachers during a din-
ner at the Dufferin Hotel, Cen-
tralia, Wednesday night, June
12.
Principal H. L. Sturgis, who
made the presentation, lauded
Mr. Koch's faithful and con-
scientious service to education.
Mr. Koch has been on the staff
at South Huron for 34 years,
serving previously in Allenford
and Holstein.
The teacher indicates he in-
tends to spend much more time
now at his second love, paint-
ing. hope to do a lot of
painting," he states, "and
probably do more gardening,
too."
Mr. Koch has attended a num-
ber of summer art schools,
taught several art classes in
the district and has completed a
number of canvasses of his won,
some of which now decorate his
home on Mill St.
During his career, Mr. Koch
has taught science subjects, in-
cluding botany, zoology, chem-
istry and physics, to an esti-
mated 5,000 students, a number
of whom have become outstand-
ing in related fields. Among
these are Dr. Peter Fraser,
now a physics professor at
UWO; Dr. Britain Sanders, a
scholarship winning medical
student; Grant Taylor, a Poly-
mer chemist, and Joseph B.
Creech, principal of St. Marys
collegiate.
The veteran instructor has
been associated with 90 dif-
ferent teachers, most of them
on the local high school staff.
The increase in secondary edu-
cation is indicated by the fact
that there were only five per-
sons on the staff when Mr.
Koch first began teaching here;
now there are 30.
The teacher indicates the
highlight of his career occurred
in January, 1950, "when we
moved out of the draughty, anti-
quated, dilapidated former pub-
lic and high school building into
the modern, clean, comfortable
efficient secondary school
which the town and surrounding
district can well be proud of."
Mr. Koch indicates teaching
of science is not without its
hazards. In addition to some of
the hi-jinks and concoctions
perpetrated by his students, he
recalls one time when he fell
into the river attempting to cap-
ture frogs for study in his class-
es.
Three other members who
are leaving the staff were hon-
ored also at the teachers' ban-
quet. They were Mrs. B. D.
Perry, who plans to practice
her home economics subject
at home; Robert Noonan and
David Boyle, who have accepted
other positions.
