Ontario report
Finds disagreement
over machinery act
By BILL STEWART
Minister of Agriculture
. The standing committee on
agriculture met to hear repre-
sentatives of the Ontario Fed-
eration of Agriculture, the On-
tario Farmers' Union, and
others, air their views on the
Ontario Federation's proposed
farm machinery act for On-
tario. Representatives of the
ORFBDA were also present and
,
,„ presented their ideas relative
to such an act
From the views expressed
there would appear to be not
unanimous opinion that there
was need for as far-reaching
an act as proposed by some
groups, Generally speaking, it
was agreed most reputable
(arm machinery manufacturers
and distributors were trying to
provide .reasonable service and
were maintaining satisfactory
parts inventories.
A resolution was passed re-
questing the minister of agri-
culture to set up a small com-
mittee to give further study to
this proposed legislation.
Your local member was
pleased to,have the opportunity
to meet several members of
the farm press as well as radio
and TV farin commentators
who were in attendance at a
"get -acquainted" meeting in the
office of the minister of agri-
culture.
Among the many things dis-
cussed was the need for in-
creased production of feed
grain in Ontario. With dry
weather conditions still prevail-
ing in Western Canada, it would
appear the shortage of feed
grain would continue in 1962.
Ontario, in the past, has pro-
duce. about 78%of the annual
feed grain requirements of the
proviece. It would now seem
wise to increase our produc-
tion if we are to maintain our
position of feeding livestock
This can be accomplished bY
a well-plarined fertilization pro -
grain, by using high producing,
disease resistant varieties of
grain, and, in some cases, the
,growing of more grain corn.
increased acreage might also
be considered.
Economic surveys take e on
several farms in the province
indicate feed grain can be
grown more profitably than it;
can usually be bought, With
this in Mind, it would seem like
good insurance to give consid-
eration to increasing feed grain
production.
