The standing committee on agriculture met to hear repre- sentatives of the Ontario Fed- eration of Agriculture, the On- tario Farmers' Union, and others, air their views on the Ontario Federation's proposed farm machinery act for On- tario. Representatives of the ORFBDA were also present and , ,„ presented their ideas relative to such an act From the views expressed there would appear to be not unanimous opinion that there was need for as far-reaching an act as proposed by some groups, Generally speaking, it was agreed most reputable (arm machinery manufacturers and distributors were trying to provide .reasonable service and were maintaining satisfactory parts inventories. A resolution was passed re- questing the minister of agri- culture to set up a small com- mittee to give further study to this proposed legislation. Your local member was pleased to,have the opportunity to meet several members of the farm press as well as radio and TV farin commentators who were in attendance at a "get -acquainted" meeting in the office of the minister of agri- culture. Among the many things dis- cussed was the need for in- creased production of feed grain in Ontario. With dry weather conditions still prevail- ing in Western Canada, it would appear the shortage of feed grain would continue in 1962. Ontario, in the past, has pro- duce. about 78%of the annual feed grain requirements of the proviece. It would now seem wise to increase our produc- tion if we are to maintain our position of feeding livestock This can be accomplished bY a well-plarined fertilization pro - grain, by using high producing, disease resistant varieties of grain, and, in some cases, the ,growing of more grain corn. increased acreage might also be considered. Economic surveys take e on several farms in the province indicate feed grain can be grown more profitably than it; can usually be bought, With this in Mind, it would seem like good insurance to give consid- eration to increasing feed grain production. * The leader a, the opposition, Mr. Wiraerineyer, opened the Liberal Party's attack on the administration of the. Govern In a 21 hoer address he charged the government with lack ,of sufficient attention to many aspects of our adminiotra- lien, centering most of his re, marks oil What he described as an increase in organized &here to Ontario. Our new prime minister, The Honourable Mr. Roberts, in the debate, replied to the Charges of the leader of the opposition pledging the Whole -hearted sup pori of the government to leav- ing rie stone unturned to assure 'British justice in its enforce - Meet, The prime, itilliddie after dealitig.at Mee length With the Charges of the Oppesitioni went on to outline the policy of his government On the Meters of tin Economic Advisory tbencili the part oer province has in '--41.te over-all economic ottuta bf eur natieri ea WIMIC., stressing oaf eVer hiereethig Aeed to dOVelOti markets for the products of our farms and industry. He dealt at length with education assistance, par- ticularly in technical and vo- cational school's. Aiming at a constructive presentation of the 'affairs of the province, Mr. Rol aitt stis called to the attention of het house the government's in :u - tion of a broad program of cur- riculum revision, particular th pr en e ly in parts of the province at have found it difficult to o - vide anything but an acadiic progra m. To the casual observer of de- bates in either the Housof Commons at Ottawa or the Leg on - islative Assembly in Tor to, it must appear somewhat con- fusing if not comfru pletely s- trating. As one such observer from a totalitarian 'state re- marked, "Who does one be- lieve, the Opposition or het Government?" We who think we understa dc nd the British concept of freenn m of the press and freedoof speech do not get unduly alarmed about this because we realize it is the democratic • right of a free people to hear all sides of the argument, re- gardless of the matter under debate, and then' to accept the decision of the majority. Perhaps this is part of our priceless heritage in this great land. Last county —Continued from page 11 HAY & STANLEY FA —Farm live in the cities, in sky -scraper apartments if necessary, in or- der to save our agricultural land. Legislation is required for regional planning to allow ci- ties and agricultural commtini- ties to live side by side in har- mony." He said Canada needs gov't leadership to protect its agri- cultural resources and a farm economy which will make farm- ing financially attractive, With a dwindling supply of land and a growing demand for food, agriculture will be the most respected and profitable industry in the country before the erid of the century, he pre- dicted.
