at Lambton banquet
Over 400 elected and employ-
ed personnel from Lambton
County gathered at the Sahara
Motel, ,Sarnia, to honor Warden
James Dalton at the annual
county dinner, Saturday.
Dalton, reeve of Grand Bend
for the past eight years, will
hand—over his duties to the
county's new warden early in
January,
Fr, Daniel Coughlin, guidance
instructor at Assumption Col-
lege, Windsor, and a brother-
in-law of Dalton, was the main
speaker in a long program of
adcleesses by county and gov't
officials.
Dui -151g his talk, Fr. Coughlin
stressed the need for the de-
velopment of an awareness
during education in community
service as an essential step to-
wards the development of a
world community.
"The love of service, not
only for oneself, but one's com-
munity., reaches out and can
develop the force towards a
wor]4 community," he said.
One of the chief objectives
in education, he said, wag to
teach children, first to learn by
watchingttheie parents and sec-
ond, to iniderstnnd that happi-
ness and self-service were re-
lated.
Children, he continued, were
naturally selfish. This continu-
ed until they were teenagers
and in high school.
"Parents should try to help
their children become unselfish
and capable of loving, giving
and not getting service and not
grasping".
Civil service, he said, and he
included those elected .to com-
munity councils or employed as
civilservants, was a shining
example of what could be done
by teaching the proper con-
cepts:of service to others.
Warden speaks
Warden James Dalton, in a
brief address, stressed the
need of the continued spirit of
co-operation that exists now
between the city and county.
Hod Bryan Cathcart, MPP,
Lambton West, also emphasiz-
ed the need of continuing co-
operation between .the two
major, municipalities.
The outstanding co-operation
that existed now was manifest-
ed in the new county -city build-
ings, ;and the spirit of co-
operation was something for
