reckoned without that sense of
dramatic timing inherent in the
pregnant fern,ale. In the middle
of the night, while the family
was staying with friends at a
cottage, she began to have her
pains.

She managed to keep most
of them - up all night. The lady
• finally dosed her eyes about
'six.; with no news yet from the

seat of the car. At seven a.m.,
she was a -wakened by a. shriek
from her daughter. Piper's
having her babies! The first
one's white! It looks like a
dinosa ur ! " Within second s,
every ldd in the vicinity was
on the spot. They stood around
in circles, watching the whole
performance, a n d cheering
each. new arrival to the echo.
The mystery of birth is -no
longer a mystery to them.
There's no moral to this
story. But I 'couldn't help
thinking, when was home lett
weekend, that it was rather
odd for my wife, who hated
pets for years, to be dancing
attendance on two children,
self-satisfied cat, three kittens,
and a brand new pup. By the
way, does anybody want ,a
lovely kitten? Your choice of
white, purple or brindle. Sex,
male. I think. It appears that
the kitten -drowning deal for
dad is postponed indefinitely.

Silver and Gold
Silver and Gold is the auto-
biography of Norman Hartnell,
dressmaker by appointment to
Her :Majesty the Queen and
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth
The Queen Mother and spans
the world of fashion for the
past 30 years.
While at Cambridge Univer-
sity .Hartnell was called upon
to design some dresses for a
play which were seen and
praised by a journalist from
London. This set him out on e
career that was to play a big
part in bringingBritish dress-
making to a point of national
and •world importance,
His progress was slow and
hard, mainly because for gen-
erations women had looked to
Paris for their new fashions.
He tells how teeeived his
first Royal order to design the
Wedding gown of Her Royal
:Highness the Duchess of glottee-
ster, He gives intl ni t e
glinipses of his work preparing
collections for Royal tours,
Vividly he describes the
summons to Buckingham Pal-
eee, where he was entrusted
With Aesigeilig and making
Princess Elitabetli's wedding
gown and later her Coronation
V ATM'.
