Scout Jamboree
By GEORGE GODLl1OLT
(Patrol Leaders George God -
bolt and Ted Wilson, both
Queen Scouts representing
First Exeler troop, attended
the jamboree at Ottawa last
week. This is George's account
of the weeklong camp.)
The third Canadian Jambo-
ree was held at Connaught Ri-
fle Ranges near Ottawa, at-
teSndedcourersby. 2700 boYs from Can-
ada, 100 from U.S.A. and 30Q
The jamboree was setup in
a quarter section system so
that each sub -camp had its own
headquarters and staff. Each
quarter was named after a :fa
mous Canadian explorer: Car-
tier, Champlain, Tho iii p s 0 0,
and MacKenzie. Our group
from the Bluewater regions Was
in sub -camp Cartier.
The Scouts cooked their own
meals on charcoal burners. The
supplies were rationed out
from a huge marquis. Once'
the meal was over and pro-
vided you were not a dishwash-
er you had free time to yisit
other boys or work on crafts.
Aliuost every morning we were
,able to ,swim. Archery, rifle
shooting and crafts were other
camp activities.
A post office and bank were
set up along with telegraph
connection to outside points.
Even though it rained almost
every day the morale of the
scouts never went down. Eve-
ry night we had 2 camp fire
and although it was lights out
was the evening, 6 , A ll the
Scents: marched in and the line
seemed alinost endless. Fin-
ally Governor General Vanier
in his official eapaeity as Chief
Scout of Canada deelared the
camp officially opened, A. sig -
