The OPP of. ficer stated that the street lighting in the area was "medi- ocre" and there were pedes- trians on the street at the time, The officers chased the car for 600 to 700 yards before Ratz stopped at a dead end street. We were d ri ving around .50 Pain said, Constable 'Martin backed up the evidence of his fellow of- ficer and also reported that Ratz had failed to •stop at two stop signs during the chase, The officers stated they had .not seen that 144 didnot stop, eide And stopped after Lhe Met said "It Was Imposeible" fer .to Sten Ann keep ahead ef them, Lights failed Rata told Magistrete 3. "I just have a small mina - my car", he said, "and it won't reach eech high speeds in such a short distance." Ile explained that his lights had short circuited and he had flipped the switch to get them back on. "The wire was loose and I fixed it the next morning", he said, John, Shaw, a passenger in the Ratz car, said they were, going between 30-35 m.p.h. "we didn't; know there was anyone following tis", 'he stat- ed. "I know I wasn't speeding", Ratz said in cross-examination by Crown Attorney S. A. K. Unfortunately, the sand on the beach was wet followinga recent rain and the sand pack. ed between the teeth more than it would if it was run through dry sand. However, it picked up some ed the debris on the beach and buried most of what remained,. His opinion was backed up by other members of the C of C, members of the Grand Bend council and other inter- ested parties who watched the machine in operation, Looks like cultivator The machine is built along the lines of a spring -toothed cultivator and is about eight feet wide. The teeth are aps proximately one inch wide and are spaced an inch apart. The teeth on the machine con be set at various depths and it can be used for levelling the sand and keeping the beach smooth and free from stones and debris. The debris can either be dragged along and dumped at intervals, or it can be set on an angle so the debris is shoved into one path. It is pulled by a tractor with a set of half-tracks. The Chamber of Commerce has been conducting a sale on their Booster Buttons in an ef- fort to raise enough money to purchase the machine. Wassmann reported that the ratepayers' association "was definitely interested in helping to buy the machine". How- ever, they don't know how much money they have at the present time, he, said. The C of C president stated, "if the Ratepayers come along with half the cost, or even close, we'll buy it". The council has agreed to furnish the tractor to pull the cleaner. A similar machine has been used successfully at beaches at Burlington and Port Dover by George Knapp, who operates the Amusement Centre at Grand Bend. He reports that under ideal conditions the machine will even pick up drinking straws and small sticks from the beach. "They clean up about 75 per- cent of the debris on the beach", he stated, "and if they are used two or three times a week, keep the beach in top shape". leseleata=leeMeeelaseMAMeetete Message from Mt.
