AATTEN, Sport e geliter Trii)e !lost Inlperial in final t* cockle Marlands in "A" la WHO SAYS IT'S NOT A SPECTATOR SPORT? rver since curling hit the areawe realized that there was considerable enthusiesm for the rock -throwing game, and this was certainly backed 14 by the erection. of new rinks at Exeter and Centralia and the use of several other arena facili- ties In the area. •However, we never put curling in the vete- . gory of hockey* baseball of basketball, where you could go and watch teams in action and enjoy a pleasant evening witnessing the competition, but after being on hand et Exeter's first bonspiel 111 their new rink last week, we have changed our opinion. Although we'll admit that we don't know Much about the game tan understatement) it didn't take too long to figure out what the opposing teams were trying to do, and we had plenty of armchair eleips around us to tell us what the skips were doing wrong. In fact, we would say there were • numerous "perfect" games called -all from behind the glass enclosure. * • - During the. course of the 13 -hour competi- .tion, most of Exeter's ardent curlers were on hand • to witness the keen play between the teams in the honspiel. Although a few of the contests were a , bit lopsided, most of them came right down to the final rock before the winner was declared, • and in some cases, extra ends had to be played • before a winner emerged. • One of the nicest things about curling, be - "Sides the fact there is no admission, is that you cap • keep an eye on four games at the same time. lf any of the matches does prove uninteresting, there . are three others you can watch, and the odds are strongly in your favor that at least two of the :games. will be well Worthwhile. . During the course of -the days action, there were at least two area teams on the ice and this helped stimulate local interest. S/1., George Robert- son, -Who jokingly informed us a couple of months • ago that he could beat any team in the area, proved it wasn't so much -of a joke as he won the second draw after a couple of real close battles, Dick Boelofson, the energetic veterinarian, •:provided plenty of thrills and. excitement as he picked up a pair of wins and lost a one -point battle • in the opener. The local rink had. three other en- thusiaetic curlers, :Bob Pletcher, Bev Alexander and Doug Parsons, and the boys really proved that It was a sweeping game. At times, at the urging of Dick, all four members of the team were giving it all they had in an effort to coax the rock into a better spot in the house. However, it was a pair of Sarnia sweep- ers who really stole the show. The two had perfect • rhythm as they swept down the ice, and drew the plaudits of the large gallery. The first endeavor by the local club at their - new rink certainly must be •rnarked dove, as feather in their cap. -Although -we have never at- tended a bonspiel before, we- don't know how it could have been run smoother. • From several of the comments we picked up from the visiting skips, the ice was very "keen" • and in the opinion of Doug Miles, it was the best ice he has curled on this season. The only flaw appeared to be a bit of a dip on the north encl • of number two and a few "runs" in number two • and three. • The distaff members' of the club prepared • an excellent noon meal for the imgry cornpetitors and also had soup and sandwiches on hand, for the the supper break. Although there probably are some members of the club who should receive special mention for their arduous work throughout the day, we saw • ton cdombites for third Rot •-• -' -,- - - ., - ',-- . teAr4171101:ttewittheer.estillis 117a:the 7:1 -. change to tie the Lueaneilder-t . BASKETBALL HJTS PEAK IN LONDON While curling may be turning into Exeter's number one sport attraction, basketball is certainly holding that position down in the :city of trees, ' With the student population at Western 'increasing every year, the crowds have been jammed in Thames Hall for almost all Western's home genies this year. We were fortunate enough to be among the • 150 °outsiders" who managed to get their hands an ducats for last 'Friday's contest (thanks to Don- ald C. Taylor) between Weetern and the IT T, •• and we .found out why the sport is so popular. Western has one of the best team § John Metras has ever coached and has a couple of real outstanding performere. _Lawson, a sharp- , shooting guard, was high scorer in the game as the Mustangs rolled to a 20 -point win over the Blues. This Lawsoe fellow can throw them in from anywhere on the floor and is real picture to watch as his two-handed shots float through the mesh. He ended up with 26 points in the game, • ana if he had really been serious, he could have bit for at least tem more. Although he didn't make the trip, this Toronto product was picked. for Canada's Olympic team last year. 'Barry Howson, a former high school stand- ' teet in London, is the leading scorer on the team, and although he was watched very earefully, he still hit for 16. He probably would have sunk a few more, but with his teammate hitting so ac., curately from the outside, he didn't have too many rebounds to pick off the boards. Well admit that this team hasn't too much local interest, but if any of our readers are le- ' ferested in basketball we hoe no qualms about advising you to try and secure some ducats for -one of Westere's home game. leATT'N AROUND -We don't. know whether k the fellow who sits in the office beside ours, felt guirty or not, hut at any rate ha clipped the fol., • lowing article out of, one of 'our daily papers.
