at the supper meeting in the
Legion Hall Friday evening,
The organization had been in-
strumental. in getting a new
post office; the contract for the
new Bank. of Montreal had been
awarded and the building should
start soon; Scouts and Cubs had
been organized and were pro-
gressing well; the St, John's
Ambulance First Aid course was
started, sponsored by the Gene-
ral Coach Works of Canada, for
which. 35 people had registered.;
a donation of $500 had been: given
to the arena and a. local news-
paper had 'been sponsored by
the group.
Mr. Firm! 'introduced Mr, Don
Spearman, Dresden, to the meet -
"trig as the, new publisher of the
Hensall Observer after July 1.
Mr. Spearman. spoke briefly an.d
hoped r for continued support for
the .local paper. MY, 'Fiford ex-
pressed approecia•tion to Mrs. S.
Rannie and Mrs. E. R. Davis
for their contribution to the Ob-
server, IL had not been a money-
making venture as it was issued
free to all residents of the dist-
rict.
Mr: Fiford announced be was
resigning as president for he
felt: it would be in the interests
of the group.

Zone officers
visit auxiliary
Mrs. Luella Hall, Blyth, past
zone commander, in speaking to
the Legion Ladies' Auxiliary at
their meeting, Tuesday, June 2
stated that "The 'youth of today
are the men and women of to-
morrow and we must give them
a • finer future than we have
had." She was introduced by
president Mrs. William Brown
who was in the'chair.
Mrs. Margaret Bogdon, Walker-
ton, district sports officer, spoke
on the progra,m of the zone and
showed interesting colored films
on the alley bowling tournament
at Walkerton.,
The group voted $200 to the
Park Board; $10.00 to the tuber-
cular summer camp and $10.00
to the Canadian Legion Youth
Training Pian.
The Auxiliary will attend di-
vine service at Carmel Presby-
terian Church. Sunday, June 14
at 11 a.m. and will be addressed
by the minister, Rev. G. Vais.
Mrs. Mary Bisback was initi-
ated into membership of the
Auxiliary, Mrs. Hall conducting
the ceremony.
Mrs. A. Clark and Mrs. Mary
Taylor were appointed on the
membership comrnittee.
There was a splendid response
for tea towels in answer to the
roll call. Mrs. L. Baynham won
the mystery prize. Mrs. Keith
Buchanan was presented with
gifts on behalf of her two yoting-
est children.
Bayfield will be the setting for
the picnic, July 12. Meetings
will resume in September with a
pot luck lunch.
Bingo winners for the recrea-
tional period were: Miss Bertha
Walker, Walkerton; Mrs. Wes
Venner; Mrs, Gordon Munn;
Mrs, Havens; Mrs. R. Vanstone;

Brock, son. of Mr. and Mrs. Rus-
sell Brock, RR 2 Kippen, re-
ceived his bachelor of applied
science degree in mechanical
engineering from the University
of Toronto at the. recent con-
vocation. Bill is engaged in a
six-month training program with
Imperial. Oil in 'Toronto in. prep-
aration for his appointment to
the industrial sales staff in Oc-
tober.
Hold rally
at Carmel
One hundred and twenty-nine
children registered at the Car-
mel Presbyterian Church, :Hen-
sel!, on Saturday afternoon for
the annual Huron County Mis-
sion Band rally. It is held in
Hensall once in every nine years.
Visitors were, from Seaforth,
Goderich, Auburn, Blyth,
Bayfield and Hensel!.
Mrs. W. Good of Blyth. the
president of the Huron Presby-
tery of the Mission Band, chair-
ed the meeting. Each group took
part in the program, Miss Carol
Brown, Hensall, was pianist for
the rally.
Special guest speaker was
Miss Barbara Woodruff, deacon-
ess, from Goderich. Her special.
story to the children was "Su-
Lae.n", a Chinese girl -from Hong
Kong.
The Hensel'. Explorers took the
devotional and Mr. George C.
Vais closed the meeting with
prayer.
Lunch was served by the ladies
of the Arnold Circle with Mrs.
Alex McGregor as convener.
Mrs. Gordon Schwalm, Mrs.

Walter Fairbairn
district resi▪ dent
Walter Patterson Fairbairn died
in Clinton Hospital Sunday, June
7 in bis 85th year.
He was the son of the late
Elliott Fairbairn and Mary }{ab -
kirk. He was born on the farm
now occupied by Mr. Glenn Bell.
He married Mary Ellen Rob-
ertson in 1903 and moved to the
farm on the boundary between
Hay and Stanley now owned by
Mr. John Anderson. They moved
to liensall 22 years ago where
,they resided until. seven years
age when, on account of ill -health
they went to reside with their
only daughter, Mrs. floss Love.
Two sons died in their early
years.
In the year 1953 they cele-
brated their golden wedding an-
niversary.
His wife died three years ago.
Surviving besides his daughter
are on sister, Mrs. Elien Dal-
rymple of Clinton and one broth-
er, John of Winnipeg, and fotfr
grandchildren.
He was a life-long member of
Kipper). United Church.
Funeral services were held
from Bonthron funeral chapel,
Hensall, en Tuesday with Rev.
MacMillan of Kippen United
ehurch, officiating, Interment
was in Hensall Union cemetery.
Pallbearers were W. G. Bell,
Wililam Fairbaire, George Arm'
strong, William Berney, Frank
Walter and John Pepper.

to feature Hensall fair
A varied program of tested at-
tractions will feature Hensall
Spring Fair and Implement Show
on Friday afternoon.
The newly elected member of
parliament for 'Huron will open
the fair.
The attractions which have
made this exhibition so popular
in the past—the feeder calf dub,
baby show, school parade and
livestock competitions --are be-
ing offered again by the South
Huron Agricultural Society, spon-
sors of the fair.
Some 22 boys and girls from
the area will be competing for
the feeder calf club prizes, and
handsomearray of trophies. Last
year's winner was Bill Strong,
of Dublin.
The show will start at one
o'clock with a school parade
down the Main street to the fair
grounds. Besides prizes - for the
best schools in the parade, the
society is providing individual
prizes of $5.00 each for the best

The Woman's Missionary So-
ciety of Carniel church met Mon-
day evening in the church school-
room with Mrs. R. J. Cameron
in the chair.
Glad Tidings was reviewed by
Mrs. R. Y. McLaren and a vocal
duett was sung by Mrs. Robert
Madge and Mrs.. Pearl. Love
with Miv. Malcolm Dougall act
boy and girl in the procession.
The society hopes to have the
trumpet band from RCAF Ste -
thin Centralia to lead. the parade.
Shortly after the opening comes
the popular baby show which at-
tracts many mothers from the
district. This contest which is
sponsored by Wilson's Drug Store
is divided into two sections, six
months and under, and six
months to one year. In addition
to three prizes provided in each

40 members. Mrs. Cook's group
was in charge of the devotional

votional period. Mrs. Orville
Jones rendered a solo with Mrs.
T. J. Sherritt, accompanist. Mrs.

Members of the Woman's Mis-
sionary Society of the United
Church met in the church school-
room Tuesday afternoon and
packed bales which weighed 283
lbs. and were valued at $556.00.
One bale will be sent to Wrinch
Memorial Hospital, Hazelton,
B.C. and one to United Church
Relief, Toronto. •

day, June 3, which is now be-
ing held at Knox Church, To-
