DRIP DRY COTTONS FOR SUMMER ---A blue cotton dress with permanent shrink-
age control featuring scoop neckline, unpressed pleats and pink buttons is modelled
by Mrs. Pearl Henderson at the Caven Congregational Circle fashion show Thursday
•vening. Her off-white hat with high draped crown was worn to one side. The four-
.t*trand bib of pink pearls and matching earrings compliments her costume,
Summer fashion festival
attracts capacity crowd
Exeter Legion hall was filled
to capacity Thursday evening for
the summer festival of fashions
and tea, sponsored by Caven
Congregational Circle.
Over 275 ladies sat at tables
for four, and viewed 22 local
models parade the latest styles
against a summer patio scene of
cool awnings, colorful umbrellas,
butterflies and blossoms to soft
background music.
Tops in fashion from the ladies
and children's wear department
of Gould & Jory, F. A. May &
Son, MacMill.an's and Irwin's
complimented by jewellry from
Jack Smith, were shown, with
Mrs. J. M. Gibson, Exeter, as
commentator.
"Beautiful clothes, hats and
accessories have given women
of today another twenty years
of youth, compared to our grand-
mothers," said Mrs. Gibson who
quoted an American fashion de-
signer as saying: "Today's
woman may be a grandmother,
but she looks like the mother of
her grandchildren."
"There is a trend this season,"
Mrs, Gibson said, "towards
clothes that definitely point out
the waistline, and marked and
emphasized waists are placed
where nature put them. The very
short jacket is still good and
frequently seen but always the
dress below will have a definite
waistline." she continued. "The
long, finger-tip jacket is in, but
this time gathered or drawn in
at the waist and flairing out at
the hem."
But the newest thing is the
"hippy" look. Hips will be
rounded and, "you won't believe
this," hip pads . to give that
rounded look are .back on the
market, stated the commentator.
The deep V neckline, wide collars
and sleeveless dresses are being
shown everywhere and, of course,
the short skirt is still "tops."
"High fashion," according to
Mrs Gibson, is a "length of leg,
and a long pointed. toe,"
The ladies were told the hats
this season favor the high draped
crown and are worn to one side
and flowers are everywhere on
bats, many models are made en-
tirely of .flowers in bright, :sum-
mer colors.
Fashions were shown for morn -
Ing, for afternoon, for dress -up
occasions and for nightwear.
Morning fashions
For those hours before noon,
fashions are simple and itbrics
tor the most part washable and
often drip-dry. Carol Lynn Sim-
mons modelled a teen-ager outfit
of high -boy bermuda shorts in
scenic green and shadow -print
blouse in a blend of greens and
orange sherbet. This costume

A cool sleeveless dress of
glazed cotton in white polka dots
on a blue background for the
matron was modelled by Mrs.
Alvin Moir. Unpressed pleats in
the skirt add to the casual com-
fort. Miss L. Ballantyne wore a
dress of tissue gingham in rose,
white and black miniature plaid,
It was a shirtwaist style., so
popular this season to be worn
for shopping or at home.
Mrs. C. D. Holland modelled a
turf -tan shantung suit in which
the matron would feel well-
dressed for any occasion. Its dol-
man sleeves, short peplum and
straight skirt were all part of
the new trend. A green petal hat
complimented the color of the
suit.
A turquoise cotton and eupioni
dress worn by Miss Marilyn
Strang was washable, and crease
resistant. The skirt had its full-
ness high on. the hip and
narrowed to the hemline.
RCAF fashions
A special feature of the fashion
Wow was introduced when four
officers and two airwomen of
Clinton and Centralia. RCAF
stations, showed what the well-
dressed woman in uniform "is
wearing this year. A No. 5 blue
dress uniform was worn by AW1
Susan Anderson and featured a
Jong jacket which fitted firmly
and skirt with six panels slightly
flared for freedom of movement.
A blue shirt and black tie are
always worn with this outfit.
F/0 Madelaine Theriault mod-
elled a No. 7 summer working
dress. The smart little colla;;
could be worn buttoned at the
throat or left open in shirtwaist
style. No tie is worn with this
garment and short sleeves in-
crease the coolness of this wash-
able dress.
