Born in Austria, Mr, and Mrs.
Reder moved to Canada because
they felt farms in the old coun-

boys in large families had little
opportunity to get established on
a farm. Jake took advantage of
a Canadian government offer to
sell land for $10 providing the•
purchaser agreed to remain on
the farm for five years.
Rather than take Saskatche-

sold the farm and' inovecl to

... u . f ` : A, Roman housewife scrubbing
her weekly wash along the banks
of the Tiber in 'le year 1. A.D.
could have dozed off into a super
alp Van Winkle snooze for a
thousand years and found her
work -day world little changed.
Despite the passage oC 10 mo-
mentous centuries, she would
still have been scrubbing her
wash by the 'riverbank without
the benefit of sink, faucet or
even clothespin in 1,000 A.D.
But consider the case of a 1907
housewife who dozed off in her
gaslit kitchen and awoke only 50
years later. What a world of
wonders would meet her eyes, a
world sparkling with hundreds
of magical appliances.
By 1957, glare -free fluorescent
lights had banished the gloom of
her old gas fixtures; a huge
home freezer and revolving tray
refrigerator had replaced the
smelly ice box; electric ranges,
wall ovens and a dozen different
kinds of broilers, fryersand ro-
tisseries had added new and
simple refinements to the ancient
art of cooking; automatic clothes
washers, dryers and irons had
taken much of the work out of
the weekly washing chores.
In the dust and pollen -free air-
conditioned living room, the
children sprawled on a' recently
vacinimed rug watching tele-
vision. Upstairs, Dad smoothly
erased his beard with an elec-
tric razor; Sis mooned over the
rawkish sounds Of Elvis on her
Phonograph; Junior tuned in a
night baseball game on his bed-
room radio and Grandma slept
snug in her room under an elec-
tric blanket,
These are but a few of the
changes that have taken place
in the home in the 50 -year his-
tory of electrical progress
through appliances in this coun-
try and throughout much of the
world. The changes occurred'
quickly and steadily but far from
suddenly. Thanks to the dedicat-

THIS
'N THAT
. By MRS. J. M. S.
Local cooks are making quite
a name for themselves on tele-
vision recently. Last week we
told about Mrs. Roy Morenz
demonstrating the making of but-
ter tarts over CKNX-TV, Wing -
ham, last Tuesday.
On Monday, Mrs. Almer Pass-
more, champion cook at the Exe-
' ter Fair, appeared on the "At
Home" 'show on CFPL-TV, Lon-
don, demonstrating the icing of
a birthday cake including the
snaking of gumdrop roses to bold
tlle.eandles or simply for decora-
tion.'
Next Tuesday on M'Lady pro-
gram over CKNX-Wingham, at
2:30 p.m., Miss Marie Hodgson,
Exeter, a student at Macdonald
Institute, Guelph, will make four
winter salads. Local ladies and
members of Hurondale Institute
have been invited to make the
audience.
Wins Cherry Pie Contest
On Friday, Anne Hislop, 19, of
Weston, a Honie Economics stu-
dent at Macdonald Institute,
Guelph, won the title of Canadi-
an cherry pie baking champion.
She won over eight finalists
chosen from 24 contestants at
Toronto Hydro. She was awarded
a $300 scholarship in home eco-
nomics to the school of her
choice; an electric range; a cup
for annual competition; a trip to
Minnapolis and to Chicago to see
the United States cherry pie bak-
ing competition and a wrist
wa tch.
When interviewed and asked if
she used her own recipe or her
mother's she said it was "My
own recipe; I worked on it until
I was happy with it."
Tarts Win Bakefest •
Previously in this column we
mentioned the Bakefest, the larg-
est cooking contest of its kind in
Canada, in which contestants
submitting the recipes judged the
top ten were brought to Toronto
the middle of January to coin-
pote in a rand bake -off for the
ttlp three prizes.
The first prize winner received
$2,500 in cash as well as a deluxe
electric washer -dryer, electric
range and food mixer, The win-

Chocolate Mint Tarts
For the pastry take:
2 cups sifted flour
1 tsp, salt
2/3 cup cold shortening
Blend with pastry blender until
like fine crumbs. Add 1/4 cup
chopped walnuts (this is the im-
aginative touch). Add 4 to 6 M.
cold water and blend with a fork.
Roll out pastry quite thin. Line
tart tins with pastry bringing
it well up over the edges. Small
tart tins are preferable as the
filling is rich. Prick pastry with
fork and bake :in 425 degree oven
for 10 to 12 minutes. This makes
2 dozen small tarts or 11/2
dozen larger ones.
Filling
3 tbl. -shortening at room
