Editor Fri IMPORTANT TO THE KIPS The minor hockey enthusiasts from the local we o wee teams right up to ,the midget -clubs through- 7out the distriet MU be looking for some enthusiasm frum their parents in the stands Friday and Saturday nights of .this .veek in the local arena. Particularly on Saturday, when the whole night has been given to the minor players to show their stuff in front of their parentsit would be nice to 'see a good crowd on hand. Three games have been lined up in such a manner that you will he able to see pee wee, bantam and midget teams in action. We know that Saturday night is an ideal time for the television set or that weekly dance. but for the sake of one night in the year, give your boy a break! Your encourage - mutt to him on the ice is one of the best teachers. For a fun -filled half hour of laughs and spills, you should try to take in the wee wee game on Friday night just prior to the Mohawks -encounter with Lunn. These youngsters will really surprise you. ft's amazing the way the kids managed to pick up the skills at such an early age and try to copy thier hockey idol's ways of doing things on the ice. Minor Hockey Week has already started with a. bang in the district with Lucan holding its official opening last Monday. We sincerely hope that the sponsors of this sport achieve their aim—to focus attention on the tremendous job being done by minor groups to encourage hockey in this country. At this time we'd like to tip the chapeau to all connected with the Exeter minor hockey setup in the way of coaches, managers, transportation committees and the dozens of other positions someone has to fill in :order to make the game possible for today's young- sters. Without your co-operation, it would be hard to figure just where the community youth would stand today. Mayor R. E. Pooley of Exeter and Group Cap- tain A. G. Kenyon of Centralia will be on hand for the opening ceremonies at the Exeter arena Saturday evening at 8:30 p.m, Don't forget! Make it a date! We'll see you there. , LOCAL PLAYOFFS AROUND THE CORNER The 'WOAA Group 1 intermediate "B" hockey playoffs are right around the corner as the regular echedule,.draws to a close next Tuesday, February 3. Exeter Mohawks can't come out of the running with any less than a tie for first place at the moment as they have three games left and would have to lose all three to enable Mitchell Red Devils to force a playoff.,The value of placing first in the loop stand- ings is that you get your choice of the next three teams to play in'the first round of the playoffs. Con- sequently, the remaining two teams would. have to battle it out for the finals. The semi-final series is a three -out -of -five affair with points to count, while the finals will consist of a seven -game series with the win- ning team cppping four victories. Exeter's three re- maining games are with Lucan, Merton and Clinton and should the tribe win any' ane of these, they will have first place salted away. If the Mohawks do finish on top of the heap, it is hard to say just who they will choose as their first round opponents. They make take Clinton or Mitchell right off the bat or let these two battle it out and select Ilderton as their opposition. Only time will tell and with the playoffs practically here, the decision shouldn't take long to decide. WILL THE N.H,L. LEAFS VACATE THE CELLAR? Quite a controversy has started up between Severar ardent district hockey fans in regards to To - route Maple Leafs making the playoffs. Several fans seem to think that the Torontonians like the cellar too well and wouldn't 'leave it for the world. Still, others say that the one famous Ma.pleos will vault right up into one of the top four playoff spots before the money series rolls around. The chief cook and bottle washer of the Leafs, manager -coach George "Punch" lmlach, maintains that his club is definitely good enough for one of those top four positions. Jim Fairbairn, one of the ardent bowling fanatics of the Spares in Exeter, says that Toronto is right at home where they are. On the other hand, another of the Spares in the person of Aub Farquhar, has a strong hunch that Toronto will leave the cellar and make the playoffs. The rest of the Spares bowling team in the persons of Wilf Shapton, Bill Stanlake, Lorne Passmore and lefty "Rapid Robert" are not sure what to think about the situation but Jim Crocker, the' old workhase of Red's Billiards' crew, agrees wholeheartedly with Aub's pre- dictions. Last Saturday night, it looked as though the. Leafs were in the Stanley Cup playoffs the way they played the second. period. But then in the third, the ioof fell th. The Leaf defence must have been on a long delayed coffee break. Boston 'carried the whole Show and walked off with a 3-I vitcory. The Toronto club is hard to figure out. Just when you put thein down for a len count, they bounce right back and punch their way into the Will column. A perfect ex-. ample happened last weekend in Chicago. Who ever thought they'd beat the Hawks right in Chicago, be. sides linlach? We thought their goose was cooked in Toronto Saturday night, It's really mating to us how Imlach shift that team into second gear when they really need a win. The Maple Leafs have been knocking on the door to leave the cellar for so long this season that their knuckles must be raw by now. However, we'd like to see the comparatively young 'blue and white Squad leave the- cellar for Someone more deserving like the You can that one in! I've lost 'enough friends!
