Blyth
Novice team
has exciting
start
BY RUSTY BLADES
The Blyth Novice Hockey team
began their W.O.A.A. season at
Mitchell on Saturday, Nov. 2 and,
in a closely played game sparked
by outstanding goaltending by
Josh Yanchus, the two teams
played.to a 2-2 tie. With the score
2-1 for Mitchell, Blyth pulled their
goalie for an extra forward with a
minute and 30 seconds left in the
game. This move quickly paid off
as Michael Bromley scored his
second goal of the game and, as the
final buzzer sounded, the score-
board read: Mitchell 2, Blyth 2.
On Friday, November 8, Blyth
travelled to Brussels and came
home with a hard-earned 3 - 2
victory. After a scoreless first
period, Blyth opened up a 2 - 0 lead
after two periods thanks to two
unassisted goals by Michael Brom-
ley. Brussels came out in the third
period and eventually battled back
to tie the game at 2 - 2, but with less
than a minute left in the game,
sharp-shooting Michael Bromley
completed his hat trick, with an
assist from Benje Hakkers, and
Blyth held on for a 3 - 2 victory. The
whole team deserves eredit for the
determination, desire and enthus-
iasm displayed in this well played
game.

Auto insurance
covers spills
Waste and chemical haulers, in
fact anyone who drives, will need
no extra insurance to cover the cost
of containing and cleaning up any
sort of environmentally dangerous
spill when Part IX of the Environ-
mental Protection Act (EPA) takes
effect on November 29, Ontario
Environment Minister Jim Brad-
ley said today.
The Minister added that his
Ministry and the insurance indus-
try has worked together to develop
a pool of liability insurance to cover
spill incidents. A number of
insurance companies have indicat-
ed that they will take part in the
pool.
"For the motorist, or for the
waste hauler, the new insurance
pool provides no additional protec-
tion and none is needed," Mr.
Bradley said. "Standard vehicle
insurance policies already include
accidental pollution risk."
While the haulers remain un-
affected by the new insurance pool,
Part IX now requires them to take
quick action to contain any spill. "It
is just common sense for you to
contain and clean up that spill to
minimize the amount of damage
caused," Mr. Bradley said.
"If you are responsible for a spill
which causes damage to another's
property then you are already
liable under common law for those
damages. The new regulation
merely clarifies responsibilities
and encourages an early and
effective response to emergencies
and provides a mechanism for
government interim compensation
until responsibility can be esta-
blished."
BY LOIS McARTER
The Brussels Bulls played a close-to-home, mid-week came.
cramming in three games this past week.
They travelled to Howick for a Wednesday night game. Howick
came out strong and scored early in the period and kept Brussels
scoreless the first period. Brussels must have re-grouped in the
intermission and came back out to score four unanswered goals, two of
them in the first five minutes of the period. Kevin McArter scored two
of those goals with one assist from Tim Fritz. Mike Vincent scored
assisted by Fritz and Kevin Ruttan with the fourth goal from Kevin
Ruttan assisted by Fritz and Rob Campbell.
Kevin McArter added one more goal for Brussels early in the third,
with Howick adding their second shortly after. McArter assisted by
Todd MacDonald and Rollie Smith scored the sixth goal for Brussels
and Howick connected for one more to end the game at 6 - 3 for
Brussels.
The Bulls had Friday night off but played at home against Clinton on
Saturday night. The first period proved to be a see-saw battle. Murray
Dewar assisted by Rollie Smith and Kevin McArter opened the scoring
for Brussels but Clinton came right back and tied the game at one.
Kevin McArter assisted by Murray Dewar put the home team in front
once more only to have Clinton come back and tie the game at two.
Dave Schmidt and Jim Bender combined to put Brussels in the lead
again but Clinton kept the pressure on and tied the game at three to end
the first period of play.
A more defensive second period of play found Jim Bender and Todd
MacDonald combining for Brussels to get the only goal of the period.
Brussels managed to add two more goals in the third period to end the
game at 6 - 3. Jim Bender assisted by R. Smith and MacDonald scored
the first goal with McArter getting the second unassisted.
The Tavistock Braves were in town on Sunday to play the home team
and took an early 1 - 0 lead in the game. Marty Rutledge assisted by
McArter and MacDonald tied the score at one for Brussels. Tavistock
added one more goal to take a 2 - 1 lead at the end of the first period.
Brussels came out strong in the second period to score three
unanswered goals. Murray Dewar and Kevin McArter scored the first
goal with Kevin Wheeler scoring the next two goals with assists from
Dave Schmidt on the first and Tim Fritz and Mike Chapman on the
second to take a 4 - 2 lead -over the visitors.
The third period had Kevin Wheeler scoring his third straight goal
assisted by Bender and Chapman, before Tavistock added their only
goal of the period. Marty Rutledge assisted by Fritz and MacDonald,
and Murray Dewar assisted by Sean Kuffer added two more markers
for Brussels to win the game at 7 - 3. Jeff McGavin had a good week in
net claiming all three victories.
It was too bad more people had not been out to see Sunday's game
and enjoy it, as it was one that was very low in penalties and was
officiated extremely well, which seems to make a huge difference in
how the game is played. The Bulls will be on the road Saturday night to
play Belmont, the top team in the southern division. There is no home
game booked for Sunday afternoon.

Hats off to Doc and Nora Stephenson who conducted a pool on the
Blue Jay series of ball and donated half the total winnings (a sum of
$110.) to Brussels Minor Sports to assist with operating expenses. It
was much appreciated.
It looks like the curling season will officially get underway this week.
It had to be cancelled last week because of inclement weather,
(condensation on the ice surface). Mixed curling starts at 7 p.m. on
Monday evenings with ladies curling Tuesday afternoons at 1 p.m.
