EY MRS. J. M. S,
Do not forget. the Better
Homes and Gardens Barbecue
Book and also the Flower Ar-
ranging Book are on your
shelves. These books should be
much ha demand at this time a
year.
Browsing around the library
the other day we came across a
book entitled
The Spell of French .Quebec
It is not a new book, being one
of a series of "Spell" books in-
cluding "The Spell of Acadia,"
"The Spell of the Rhine"—in fact
we counted over 30 such books.
The book contains many leg-
ends, folk songs and folk lore
and describes the handicrafts
and religious festivals of the
people of Quebec.
The author writes "Almoet
every old Quebec village has its
legend — some marvellous event
which is handed down from gen-
eration to generation. This is es-
pecially true with the villages
along the St, Lawrence. These
stories are sometimes bits of
history into which some super-
natural element has been intro-
duced or newer versions of old
tales brought from France. A
particularly interesting tale is
that told concerning the village
of Trois Pistoles where many
students perfect the French lan-
guage,
Formerly the folk songs of
French Canada were a part of
the daily life of the people. in
the larger towns they are fast
being forgotten but in the remote
districts they still live, The Fed-
eral Government is collecting
and preserving these folk songs.
Many of our readers have re-
cently traveled along the St.
Lawrence or plan to do en in the
near future So that this book
would be interesting reacting.
During the holidays browse in
your library and find much in-
teresting reading,
