Mohawks make -'um plenty smoke with big
flame for weeks. Now, flame only a simmer after
Saturday game! Many warriors leaving tribe through
Witch Doetor, Medicine 119 good! Injury's too much,
ugh!
That just about sums up. the injury chart for
MTER, MOHAWKS after their Saturday night
exhibition game with what was supposed to be
IiI.TCHENER SWAN CLEANERS and the first half
of the WOAA INT.-1-10MERREW hockey .schedule.
With the loss of blueliner BOB COATES for
the balance of the season because of a broken ankle,
and with LARRY HEIDEMAN, KEVIN DELBRIDGE
and CY BLOMMAERT on the limp for possibly a
week or two, things are beginning to look really
grim for the tribe who are just baptizing their feet
into the second half of their 22 -game schedule, To
top it all, another blueline buster by the name of
BILL WAGHORN may have to have his wrist operat-
ed on within a week or two. Looks like being the
water boy is the only safe job on a hockey club.
However, the tribe isn't the only club in
operation knee deep in injuries. FOREST LAKE -
SIDES, through D. S. NEWTON, a barber of that
town who does the sports coverage there, report
that five :of tkeir club have signed hospital charts.
WAYNE COUSINS is out with a broken wrist;
JIM WOLSLEY has a shoulder separation; STAN
ULRICH a broken nose; LLOYD CAMERON a broken
vase and last but not least, KEITH SNELL is out
with a shoulder separation. It might be a good idea
12 the MOHAWKS and LAKESIDES join forces for
a game or two. Maybe between the two clubs they
can ice a full lineup.
AYNONE FOR REFEREEING? - Refereeing
stems to be getting to be a popular pastime with
many of the players who are still participating in
the different hockey cir-
cuits around the country
and with athletes who have
given ,up the game as far
as being active players.
One night in Exeter we
'tad a chap by the name of
RAY RICHARDS, who used
to wear a Mohawk uniform,
doing some whistle tooting.
Up in Clinton when the
tribe played its first visit
of the season there, HAR-
OLD HEINBUCK and BILL
GATENBY of Mitchell handled the game with author-
ity. We even had one player in our own league show
up to handle a game early in the season. He was
KENNY DOIG, the classy Clinton star. The game
took place in Forest .against the Lakesides if we
remember correctly.
Having players handle these games may have
its . advantages. The main one is that they may gain
more respect for the official when they play them-
selves after having som.e experience in the business.
Our personal opinion is that it's a tough racket. No
matter if you called every play on the ice to per-
fection, you can't please everyone. Someone's bound
to be down your neck before the game is over. To
be a good referee and get by all you have to do is
ignore everything that takes place off the ice, act
dumb in some circumstances when players throw
smart remarks your way and accept cheques that
aren't too large for your work!
CURLING IS BOOMING! -The Exeter arena
has been a very busy place this past week with the
EXETER CURLING- CLUB holding its first two-day
mixed bonspiel of the season. We understand that
many top grade stones were thrown throughout the
affair and a number of games were decided on the
skill of the skips with their last rocks. We'd like to
pass along our congrats to the ART CANN rink in
winning the grand championship with five straight
wins. Also a tip of the hat to our friend MORLEY
SANDERS and his team in winning the "B'group
title. An open bonspiel is being planned for FEB.
12 in which many outside rinks have indicated they
will participate.
*
RIGHT CUFF - We'd like to pass along to
KEITH O'NEIL of Lucan our best wishes for a speedy
recovery after a recent injury he received in a hockey
game. The competitive young athlete who plays for
LUCAN MIDGETS and MEDWAY suffered a concus-
sion and a broken arm when he collided with an.
opposing player and fleW into the boards head first
. That should be quite a hockey game when the
WATFORD PEE WEES move into Lucan for an
exhibition game on February 1. The all -girl line used
by the Watford coach should really •be a drawing
card. We understand that the. Toronto papers (by-
products of the T -A) will be covering the feature
- . RCAF Centralia will be defending their All -
Canadian Training Coinmand Hockey Championship
they won last year from MacDonald Man,, before the
month of February runs out,
* *
VOTHER CUFF -Baseball fever is 'starting to
rise again. Smitty the barber, who wheels a mean
pair of scissors, tells all of his victims that the NEW
.'ORiC YANIMES will still be on top of the heap
At the end of the '58 season . . On the other side
bi the fence, we hear -from MURRAY' BRINTNELL,
HAROLD WOLFE and HARRY HOLTZMAN that the
Yanks will have a hard time trying to "hold them
Tigers!" . Still another sound from JIMMY RUS-
SELL which tells us that CLEVELAND INDIANS are
title threats . . There are so many authorities, you
don't know who to believe. Maybe the crystal ball
has the answer, Right Casey? Every time we
run into I -IAL 1100KE on the main drag, we're re-
minded that another sport isn't too far away. In
fact, the keen shotmaker almost has the distance
down to the exact weeks, days, hours and minutes
that we have to wait before the golf clubs can be
swung again out in the nice warm sunshine. The
Exeter GOLF CLUB looks for bigger and better
things this year and to us there seems to be no
reason why they shouldn't get them. More members
and more tournaments are in the spotlight. Wd think
it would help to boost things if tile WRUNG CLUE
MEMBERS -and the GOLF CLUi MEM joined
forces for summer and winter in their respective
games. It would be ideal recreation for anyone who
could gt away. „ •

Exeter Mohawks, after a shab-

Throughout the first period more
