evegr loviiing wife
If be did but know it, far from
appreciating his compliment,
she more often feels like telling
him, to go back to mamma.,.
or somewhere.
For brides suffering under the
tyranny of a "mamma's cook-
ing'; complex, the Canadian
Institute of Plumbing and Heat-
ing has good news. Some psY-
chologists, they find, are coating
to the conclusion that mamma's
cooking really wasn't all that
good.. It's just that to growing
boys everything tastes marvel-
lous. The fact is that the modern
woman's cooking is probably
much better than was her
mather-in.law's.
And there is good reason for
this - - - the modern planned
kitchen!
Planned kitchens are a fairly,
recent development, and one
that is available not only to
owners of new' houses, but to
those with the ingenuity and de-
sire to bring their homes up•to•
date. The object of the planned
kitchen is to save time and
labour, and when this object is
attained, the result is a more
contented and therefore more
successful cook.
Kitchens today are laid out
on the principle of easy "work
flow." This involves arrange-
ment of work -surfaces in order
of their use, so that foodstuffs
come into the kitchen direct to
store cupboards and refrigerator,
thence to the work surfaces
where they are prepared .for
cooking and then to the cooking
appliance and on to the dining
area. Depending uponthe size
and shape of the room, this
arrangemebt usually follows au

the preparation of food. none is
more important•than the kitchen
sink, yet in modernization plans,
this is the appliance which is
frequently overlooked. dere the
foods are pared and cleaned
ready, for ,eookn;,,, and here the
utensils used in the preparation
and cooking of food are washed,
It is, in fact, the sanitary centre
of the kitchen.
Most popular of the tetany
types of sink available is the
combination sink•and-tub unit,
which combines the advantages
of a deep tub for soaking and a
sink for washing, New models, of.
course, are equipped with a
swivel -type mixer faucet which
provides water of the right- tem-
perature to either compartment
of the unit at will. Another
handy innovation is the retract-
able hose attachment with spray
head an invaluable help in rins-
ing vegetables and for similar
chores, while a spray brush
attachment turns it into a hand
dishwasher. And the , eup-type
strainer handily catches waste
from vegetable preparation can
be removed, cleaned and re
placed in no time at all.
In a kitchen like this, no mod-
dern bride need really fear the
competition of her mother-in-
law's culinary achievements.
But she might well spare a .jot
of sympathy for her future
daughter-in-law as she prepares
the meals her son will brag about
to his wife one day.
ANOTHER URANIUM MINE IN PRODUCTION—Another

operating since April on its $29,754,800 government con-
tract, had its official opening May 1. When operating at
full capacity it will .mill 1,200 tons of ore a day, supple- t
menting its ore with that of Greyhawk Mines, which has
a $20,350,050 government contract.

students of the Orff Schulwerk method of teaching would
rather practice than eat—or almost. Many of the students
at the Toronto Conservatory of Music arrive half an hour

veloped by Carl Orff, of Germany, is designed to prepare
youngsters for serious lessons in life and it concentrates
on simple melodies and rhythms. Rickie Green is one of
Louise Hoffman's pupils and'with drumsticks in his hands,
