Fothor'o .Bson to Mars is a ea,
tire. This play laughs at Man)!
aspects of a television program—
from the very subject matter to
the .c.ommercial. The subject -plat-
en ter which the Dalzell and Mhz-
fr..
at -
man play treats is a common va-
riety of children's program., a
space 'thriller.
To Lawrence Gibson, hero of
the show, Captain Galaxy is sym-
bolic of the farce of Good that
forever overcomes the force of
Evil, represented an his show by
Countess Vilma. Because his pro-
gram exemplifies a moral truth,
and because of his popularity,
Gibson believes 14 the value of
WS work; '"Te destroy me would
be to destroythe idol •of all the
kids of America!”
' However, Larry Gibson carries
his world of make-believe into his
real world. All .too frequently he
assumes the character of Captain
Galaxy in his home life, with va-
rious effects on the members of
the household.
Corp, Gihson'syoung son, still
lives an the imaginative world of
childhood. His adoration of his
father is obvious throughout the
•play, Corky is forever willing to
be in the supersonic sphere with
his father. He more than wel-
comes the moments in which
Larry.,
as Captain Galaxy, will
play with, him as Space Scout
Billy.
Gloria Gibson, sophisticated
higk •school daughter of Larry,
dislikes the unexpected home per-
formances of her father. To her,
his behaviour is a source of em-
barrassment. In trying to win a
new boy friend, she is thwarted
by the futuristic reception Larry
gives him.
• Mildred Gibson, wife of Larry,
accepts the whole situation with
complete indifference. She is
more concerned with her flowers
and with her notion of a dwarf
sunflower for the next horticul-
tural exhibit. It is not until -the
meeting of the sewing circle that
she becomes sharply aware of
her husband's eccentric behaviour
and her daughter's ,problem.
In the course of the conversa-
tion on whether or not young chil-
dren should be allowed to watch
such a type of thriller, the girls
are interrupted by the arrival of
Larry with his space -mate, Coun-
tess Vilma. A heated argument
follows, the outcome of which is
the stormy exit of three good
friends of the family. They have
been thoroughly insulted.
• A later telephone call informs'
Mildred that the members of the
circle are no longer on friendly
terms with her. So she too, with
Gloria, is ready for a scheme to
bring Larry down to earth.
The opportunity for revenge
soon arrives. Roland Pierce,
president of the network, has long
considered Larry for an executive
position. He plans an interview at
the Gibson household. Absolutely
unaware of the importance of
Larry's visitor. Mildred and
Gloria plan a ridiculous reception
with ,the hope of embarrassing
Larry so that he can appreciate
their point of view. In the •course
of the interview, Mildred and
Gloria enter dressed in fantastic
costumes. Their wild behaviour
as Moon -Girls completely con-
vinces Pierce that they are insane
and that Larry is unsuitable for
the job. He storms out.
