Mohawks' Edge Harriston 9-8; ■ YOUR McKibbens MAKE s-. a Easter Headquarters An eleventh-hour rally in the final five minutes of the game did the trick for the Wingham Mohawks on Saturday, when they edged Harriston 9-8 to win the second straight game in the best-of-seven group playoffs. The locals took an early one-goal lead in the first frame, but were snowed under in the second period when Harriston went on a scoring Spree which netted them four goals compared with Wingham’s two. Two Harriston counters in the first part of the final stanza left the locals three goals behind the eightball before they started the long comeback trail which ended in a photo finish. Two quickies by Bill Hilbert put the locals within shouting distance, but Ash notched one for Harriston put ting Harriston out in front by a pair at the halfway mark in the third frame. Then the fun began. Several members of the victorious Cannington team last year and the year before played against Wingham Juveniles as bantams and midgets at the game in which Wingham defeated Cannington for the Ontario Bantam and Midget crowns. In Saturday’s game 'Cannington led 2-1 in the second period but was tied up in the third period. Captain Jim Josephson broke the 2-2 deadlock at 15.12 of the third and added the in surance counter less than a minute later. It was Cannington’s second cham pionship in three days, their midgets having won from Seaforth on Thurs day. Last year they were defeated by the Wingham Midgets for the Ontario championship and in 1953 they lost out to Wingham Bantams in the final game. Johnny to go, at 18.37 evened the score ’and brought the crowd to its feet, The climax came at 19.25 when Bob Ritter notched a beauty from Hilbert’s pass, to put the locals ahead by a nose at the final, buzzer. Scoring for Wingham were Neil Stainton, Crewson and Hilbert with two each, and Maurice Stainton, Lloyd and Ritter with singles. Star for Harriston was Murray Maltby with four, while Parker and Ash got two each.
