Mr. Janies Weir, of London, spent the week-end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Davidson and on Sun­ day they and ,Mrs. Mitchell, of Wing­ ham, visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Gaunt’of Marnoch. Benson and Martin Straughan, of Goderich, are holidaying at the home of their aunt, Mrs. Jas. Laidlaw. Mr. Victor Emerson has been laid -F* G- Gillespie, up with an abcess on his hand, and Mr. Jas. Emerson has also been under the doctor’s care. Clifford Farrier saw a wolf Thurs­ day last in the lane near the back of their farm, but it made good its escape before he could get his gun. Mrs. Jas. MacGregor, who has been ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. FI. Moore, for the past few weeks,' was able to return to her home in the village on Friday last, Mrs. (Moffatt is staying with her at present. Rev. and Mrs. Graydon Cox and Donna, of Matheson, are visiting this week with her- parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mac Rross. Ivan Henderson, Luck­ now, is also visiting there. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Weaver and little son, of Sudbury, spent the week­ end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. K. Weaver and with her parents at Mild­ may. Quite a number were present to en­ joy the picnic at the 10th bridge last Tuesday when the Sunday School of the United Church gathered and un­ der the leadership of Mr. H. Pololck and Genevieve Watt, ran many races and contests, and all enjoyed the soc­ ial outing and picnic supper beside the river. Mr. George Graham, of Detroit, and his nephew, Jimmie Graham, Petrolia; spent last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leask McGee and with oth­ er E. Wawanosh relatives. Mr. Harold Sparling, of Camp Bor­ den, spent the week-end with Mrs. Sparling and their family. Miss Maxine Reed, of Listowel, spent last week at the home of Mrs. Mrs. Cur- Mrs. Master Billie Purdon is holidaying with his grandparents, Mr. and Goyeau, of Leamington. Mrs. John Menary, Mrs. Herb ran and Alma, of Ashfield, and Kenneth Campbell and three children, of Detroit, spent Friday last at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Curran. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Johnston, God­ erich, are spending a week at the I work and her willing assistance given ; in taking a part in two very success­ ful plays presented by the Young Peo­ ple were acknowledged. She was also a valued member of the Choir and Ex­ celsior Girls’ Class. The address also carried the best wishes of all for her success in the future. She was asked to accept as' a remembrance* .of. the time spent together a pair of silver candlesticks, presented by Miss Velma Wheeler. The address was signed on behalf of the Young People’s Society by George Michie, President of the Choir, Velma Wheeler and Excelsior Girls’ Class by Mabel Coultes, Pres­ ident. Miss Lane, in a few well chos­ en words, thanked all for the gift and best wishes. A game of softball clos­ ed the afternoon’s activities. So great were the changes he saw -in these parts, that he said he would not have known his old home, j nor his brothers, _ of whom Robert, George and Ben reside here, and Har­ ry at Belgrave, and his sister, Mrs. Herb. Laidlaw in W. Wawanosh. He renewed old acquaintances with inter­ esting zeal, and tried walking to his boyhood pal’s farm as of old barefoot. On Sunday morning at the United Church, he addressed the Bible class with old reminiscences, remembering his former teacher and Sunday School Supt., the late Mrs. Cuyler, by wear­ ing a flower from her garden in the village. In the afternoon a family pic­ nic was held at the old home, when beside the immediate families gather­ ed-were Mr. and Mrs. Morgan Jones and three children of Clinton, Mrs. Bigins and three children of Windsor, and Mrs. Bell of Wingham. After vis­ iting ,at Belgrave and Listowel, he left on Monday to visit his brother, Will and his wife’s people in Cleveland. Rev. and Mrs. W. J. Watt left last Friday-for their home it} Toronto af­ ter spending their holidays with their family here. The regular monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute will be held in the Hall here next Tuesday, Aug. 13. Mrs. John Gillespie returned home from Yarmouth Centre on Saturday night, after spending a week with Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Gillespie. Mr. and Mrs. Russel Ritchie of Holyrood spent Sunday with her par­ ents, Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Tiffin. Little Donald Stewart, of Langside, is visiting with Ivan Laidlaw. This community extends best wish­ es to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hall, who were married on Saturday at the home of her parents, Mr. and .Mrs. John Craig, with Rev. J. Pollock officiating in the presence of immediate relativ­ es. Aftei- a short honeymoon they will reside in Wingham. Janet will be greatly missed in social and church circles in this community as she was always ready and able and willing to help along every ‘line of community work. Wilkinson, who have been visiting for the post couple of months with'Mr. Chas. Wilkinson and other friends, returned to their home at Echo Bay, last week. The annual picnic of the Young People’s Society of Knox United Church was held at Harbour Park, in Goderich Tuesday afternoon of last week. The weather was ideal for a picnic and over seventy attended. The chief entertainment in the afternoon was swimming and bathing at the beach, after which all gathered for the picnic supper served in the park. Immediately following supper, the opportunity was taken to honor Miss Winnie Lane,-Lucknow, who resigned her position as teacher in Belgrave school at the- end of 'the school year. A, Williams, formerly of Cranbrook and Ethel, preached in Knox Presbyterian Church and Ead­ ies on Sunday and will preach again next Sunday. Rev. C. Tavener and Mrs. Tavener are holidaying this week and next Sunday members of the Y.P.U., Unit­ ed Church, will have charge of the service. The regular Women’s Institute meeting will be held Thursday on the lawn at the home of Mrs. Aitkin. A picnic lunch will be served, The Annual Home Helpers’ meet­ ing of the W.M.S, of Knox Presby­ terian Church was held on Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Peter S. McEwen. The president; Mrs. J. J. Elliott presided. Mrs. F. G. Fowler read Psalm 19 and gave an explana­ tion of its beauty. Mrs. Harvey Rob­ ertson led in prayer. Miss Olive Scott contributed a missionary reading on “How a’ Boy Won a Town.” The study of the book “Moving Millions” was continued. Mrs. Cameron Adams told of the beginning of medical mis­ sionary work' in India and the prog­ ress it has made. Women doctors in India fill a large place in healing the sick .and teaching the Word of God. The society is grateful to the Turn­ berry Circle of the Ladies’ Aid for the proceeds of the illustrated lecture given by Miss Clara McGowan, Blyth. At the close of the meeting a social hour was enjoyed over a cup of tea. Mrs. S. N, Gallaher was the hostess on Thursday .afternoon for the month­ ly meeting of the Woman’s Associa­ tion of the United Church. The pres­ ident, Mrs. Gallaher presided and con­ ducted the opening devotional period and arranged some items of business. A patriotic reading, suitable to world conditions at the present time, was read by Mrs. C. Tavener. Refresh­ ments were served by the hostess with Mrs. Arthur McGee, Mrs. H. Shiell and Mrs. Frank Stamper assisting. During the afternoon some of the lad­ ies were engaged in knitting and Mrs. Robertson distributed patches from Red Cross sewing, for quilts. , Miss Jean Elliott spent this week at Kintail Camp on Lake Huron, a delegate from the Y.P.S. of Knox Presbyterian Church. Miss Dorothy Aitken has returned! home after spend­ ing a month with relatives at Beeton. Miss Nancy J. Fowler has returned to Columbus, Ohio, after a week’s va­ cation. She was acompanied part way by her parents, Rev. F.' G. and Mrs. Fowler. Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Smith spent the holiday at Kingston. Miss Florence- Fowler was a Sunday visitor with relatives at Seaforth. Mr. and Mrs. Allan Ramsay were the guests of Rev. J. W. Currie and Mrs. Currie recently at Bruce Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Douglas and Miss Ruby Duff, dietitian at the Wo­ man’s College Hospital, Toronto, are holidaying at the home of Miss Duff. Miss Mabie Coultes. On Friday afternoon of last week Roe’s Church held their annual picnic on the river flats at Selah Brecken­ ridge’s. There was quite a good-sized crowd gathered. The afternoon was. spent in bathing, races of various kinds, football, baseball, etc., after which lunch was served. In the even­ ing all went home having enjoyed themselves in a sociable way. Miss Irene Grainger and friend, of Toronto, are spending their holidays with Mr. and Mrs. Mervin Grainger.
