I Weekly IGarden‘Graph | I By DEAN HALLIDAY I ...........................................—iniirniMiJ The most serious disease to attack beans is Anthracnose, a fungus dis ease, which affects steim^oliage and the fruit of the bean plant. Even the i>ean seeds frequently are affected by the disease as shown in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing. Since the dis ease lives over from one year to an other, it is important to obtain healthy seeds and to discard any which are spotted or discolored. As shown in Figure 2, the disease also causes brown spots on the bean pods. Since the disease also attacks the stems and foliage of the plants, any affected seedings found in the vegetable garden should be immedi ately removed and burned. Presence of the disease can be recognized by the elongated, sunken dark-red -cank ers on the stem, and leaf veins. Do not attempt to grow beans on land which contained infected beans the year before. Do not cultivate, or pick beans, or even walk through the bean patch when it is wet for fear of young seedlings with Bordeaux mix ture when the plants are about five inches high. Repeat the spraying at intervals of two weeks. Three-such sprayings will usually suffice to check the disease. Wiped Out His Family Authorities delved further into the financial affairs of William Hunt, ag ed about 45, of Scottsville, -and were reaffirmed in their opinion that it was money worries that sent him beserk and turned his home, two miles' south of Lambeth and eight miles from London, into a shambles wherein lay the bodies of all five members of his family. Aided by the story of a nei ghbor who witnessed part of the ev ents, police reconstructed that Hunt shot down fiis mother-in-law? 80-year- old Mrs. Charlotte Warren, pursued his wife, Elsie, aged about 40, 100 feet across a la’wn and shot her when she became tangled in a fence, put his •gun to the heads of each of his child ren, Joh'n, 16, and June, 12, and killed them while they slept, then finally thrust the muzzle into his own mouth and pulled the trigger. 4 lies.
