Mr. Archie Halliday, of Toronto, is visiting hisjnother in the village. Tom Ritchie and John Neilson have enlisted for service in the 100th Bat­ tery. Leonard King tried to enlist but was not accepted. Mr, and Mrs. John King, of Tor­ onto, spent the week-end with the former’s parents, /Mr. and Mrs. Chas.. King. Mr. and Mrs, Alex, Hastie, Toron­ to, spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Ken Hastie. Mrs. Rumsey, of Toronto, who had spent the summer with her mother, Mrs. Montgomery, returned home this week. Rev, and Mrs. Butt and family, of Harrow, visited friends in town last week and also spent a few days with Mr, and Mrs. Thomas Bradnock at Bruce Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bolton, Maxine and Clare, were Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Albrecht, near Harris­ ton. Mrs. C. H. Stever and family, of Detroit, who have Leen spending the summer at 15ruce Beach, visited last week at the home of Mr.’and Mrs. H. "V. Holmes. Those from Gorrie who attended the Women’s Institute Convention in Guelph last week were: Mesdames V, Shera, G. Mundell, W. Kaine, Ed. Bolton, R. Percy Ashton, Hartwell Mr. and Mrs. Archie .'Saturday last with Listowel friends. Mr. Ernest King spent a couple of •days in Toronto this week with his •daughter, Mrs. Percy Colmer and Mr. Colmer. The sympathy of the community is •extended to the family of the late Mrs. George Hubbard, of Orangehill who passed away on Monday morn­ ing. Mr. Ed. Bolton was a Toronto vis­ itor one day last week. Ladies’ Aid Held Meeting The Ladies’ Aid of the Presbyter­ ian Church met last week at the home •of Mrs. Burns Stewart. In the ab- .sence of Mrs. .Irwin, the president, the chair was taken by Mrs. Stewart. Interesting readings were given by Mrs. Mundell, Mrs. Pritchard, Mrs. .Neilson and Mrs. Edgar. .Miss Mc- JLaughlin read an interesting chapter :from the book “Women of the Bible”. After the close of the meeting a soc­ ial hour was spent and an excellent lunch served by the hostess. Special Services Held Sunday Harvest Thanksgiving services were held in St. Stephen’s Church on Sun­ day last. The rector, Rev. J. L. Ball, who was in charge of the service, de­ livered a very impressive serman, >choosing his text from St. Matthew’s -Gospel 6: 34 “Take no thought for ■the morrow.” Special music was ren­ dered by the choir and the church -was beautifully decorated with grain, iruit, vegetables and flowers. EVENING AUXILIARY REGULAR MEETING The regular meeting of the Gorrie Evening .Auxiliary was held at the home of Miss Evelyn Dane. Mrs. Everett Sparling and Mrs. Erie Toner were in charge of the program. The theme was “God Hears Pray­ er.” The meeting opened with the singing of a hymn after which the Lord’s Prayer was repeated in unison. Psalm No. 1 followed the singing of the hymn “Just as I am.” /Mrs. Ewart Whitfield then led in prayer. A splendid paper was given by Mrs. Erie Toner on “Self Protection.” She began her talk by stating that just as no business man tries to run his af­ fairs without taking’ stock and no company are without’bUsiness confer­ ences, to keep theA wheels running smoothly, so none of us are compe­ tent enough to keep our lives run­ ning smoothly without a check-up on our inner life sometimes. R. L. Stev­ enson tells of a little child who paus­ ing in her play to listen attentively* was asked who She was' listening to. Her answer was “I’m listening to see if God has something He wants to tell me*” Mrs. Toner suggested we should each take time to listen at­ tentively to our inner self. Our hap­ piness aud contentment came to us On Thursday afternoon last week the W. A. of St. Stephen’s Church, Gorrie, also the Girls’ Branch, met at the home of Mrs. John Dinsmore for the first meeting of the fall. The meeting opened with the singing of a hymn, after which the member’s prayer and the Lord’s Prayer were Said in unison. Minutes of last meet­ ing were read and approved and roll call responded to by a Bible verse on the subject of Harvest. Rev. J. Gra­ ham, of Bayfield, read the Scripture reading which was taken from the 13th chapter of St. Matthew’^ Gospel after which a hymn was sung. Mrs. Graham, of Bayfield, Deanery President, who was the guest speaker* gave a very helpful and inspiring ad­ dress, choosing as her subject “Spir­ itual Stock-Taking." Very interesting addresses were given by Rev. J. Gra­ ham and Rev. J. L. Ball. The meet­ ing closed with a hymn and benedic­ tion by .the president, Mrs. Holmes. A delightful lunch was then by the hostess. Gamble, of of last week spent part of HOWICK SCHOOL FAIR PROGRAM The program held Friday evening in connection with the Howick town­ ship school fair was a decided suc­ cess. At the evening session there were three outstanding events' One was another splendid address by Mr. Mc­ Tavish on the Task of Religious Edu­ cation. Mr. Hargreaves, of Fordwich,,. gave a demonstration of a Tuxist Square with his boys’ class which was very much enjoyed. The nominating committee reported the officers for the year which were accepted by the convention and the officers were then installed by Mr. McTavish.
