Why Condemn George McCullagh? Letter Asks. Editor, Wingham Advance-Times: Sorry to say the writer of a recent letter (Mr. J. G. Webster) to this pa per seems to be endowed with a frame of mind given to destructive and sar castic criticism and along with mud slinging it plays too large a part in our parliaments and is not welcomed by any fair-minded person, I say Mr. McCullagh is more to be congratulated than condemned or criticized. Whether he is right or not in his efforts, he. did show a decided’ note of sincerity which has too often been lacking in our governments. Demoncracy is generally agreed to be the proper type of government and social order in Canada and many oth er countries but why so many prob lems existing which are contrary to Democracy? Mr. McCullough did not advocate the dissolving of the two-party sys tem but advised members of the much ballyhooed Leadership League to continue working with their respect ive parties and then if they did not do something, possibly the ‘Leader ship League would become a thing of potency. It has been truly said that Demo cracy requires leaders of greater cour age, intelligence, unselfishness and better morals than clo other forms of government, and until leaders give whole-hearted expression to these principles we shall still be confronted with the problems of ’ the’ day; with probably -drastic results. It is a case of when you get the man right you will have the world right. At present I am not a member of the’ Leadership League, and I hope Mr. Webster’s future remarks may be devoted to something more construct ive. In Pain for Weeks Acting on the principle of “when you know a good thing tell your friends about it," a man who has had very bad lumbago pains writes as follows;— "1 suffered from lumbago, and for weeks could scarcely mdve in bed. I had treatment, but it did not ease the pain very much. A friend said, ‘Why not take Kruschen Salts? Take them every morning and you’ll likely relief from the pain in your back.’ I have taken them every morning some time and I am. fit condition my work again—thank’s to Kruschen; —C.B. Why is it that lumbago, backache, rheumatism and indigestion in many cases yield to Kruschen Sal.ts? Be cause it is a combination of several mineral salts that are vital for .your bodily well-being. Each of these salts has an action of its own. Stomach, liver, kidneys and digestive tract are all benefited and toned up to a high state of efficiency. get So for for ft M. Ross Smith. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR condescends to enlighten me as to these though his enlightenment is very scantily attired. He says that, when the next Federal election comes along the League will have candid- dates in every riding; men of its own choice, not Tory or Grit Machine Men, but men, honest of purpose, etc., etc., and the League will SEE that, these candidates GO OVER THE TOP. Evidently this League is going to be an almighty mighty thing. But when its candidates go over the top, Mr. Thompson does not specify what they are going to do, or how they are going to do what they are going to do,—simply because HE DOES NOT KNOW. Tories and Grits have platforms and policies, such as they are. They , say elect us and we will endeavour to implement our programme, such as it is. But the League has no programme and if we elect candidates simply be cause they belong to the League we will fill Parliament Housfi with such a bunch. of marvellous men as never before decorated its benches. These will all be garbed alike, though per sonal charm will be more or less con spicuous. They , will all think alike; do each as the other does, and even dream the same dreams, with befitt ing nightmare disturbances. If the other members \of the League have the same conception of it as Mr. Thompson voices, and that conception fits it, then it is up to those who still retain possession of their senses to take up arms against it, and prepare to fight it with tooth and nail, talons and claws, or whatever weapons they can lay hands on so that it may doomed to a speedy extinction. Yours., truly, Jas. G. Webster. St, thing Treat afions—a crepe paper across the table, some fancy paper napkins, and maybe a wee sprig of shamrock for the centre. Place this on top of the fish mixture, Bake in a moderate oven till hot and brown, Top with grated Canadian cheese just before removing from the oven. Fresh fillets may be used hnd, if so, the cooking time will be a little longer. Serves 6. After the food, a few old time danc es, some songs, some merry jests, and you will agree that you have done honour to good St, Patrick. The Leadership League Editor Advance-Times: Please give me an opportunity to reply to the strictures on the letter I wrote on the above subject furnished by Mr. Robert Thompson. The pre amble to Mr. Thompson’s effusion in correctly accoutres me with a know ledge of things in general, and ac- cutely developed sense. of smell. I made no claim, nor can I honestly make claim to the possession of ei ther of these things; but, if both be necessary to the understanding of what the League is, as is logically de ducible from Mr. Thompson’s men tion. of them; then I, having ’neither am mentally and smellingly unfitted to achieve understanding, notwith standing the aggressive inquisitive ness which I do claim 1 am possessed of, and which I have indulged and tried to improve and sharpen from my youth up. Mr, Thompson, however, under stands the ins and outs and round abouts of the League, and graciously 4 . A near-catastrophe was narrowly- averted at Blytli when 18 people, ad ults and children, were nearly asphyx iated by coal gas during the progress of a Mission Blind supper in the base ment of the United Church. The fur nace, a hot air system, is located at the rear of the room iu, which the sup per tables were laid. Two ladies, Miss' McDonald and Miss Fairservice, who were supervis ing the children’s affair, lapsed into unconsciousness at their seats at the1 banquet tabic, and had to be carried out to fresh air. A third, Mrs. Grasby, got as far-as the sidewalk when she collapsed. All had to be taken home, and it was said that Miss Fairservice did not recover f consciousness until 11 o’clock at I night. | *The coal gas affected people in i varying degrees, grown-ups more than i children, although they too, reeled as | they 'made their way to the outdoors. j A defect in the furnace is blamed.
