The Exeter Times-Advocate, 1956-12-13, Page 4The Tim.e«TMviii'«iite< D«c«mb«r 13, 195^ SPORTS By 30N "BOOM BOOM" GRAVETT Sports Editor The highly-rated STRATHROY ROCKETS (in that town anyway) will be the guests of the EXETER MOHAWKS this Friday night. As usual, the tribe is having its troubles with their “cousins” from the other end of the 40-mile jaunt. Because the EXETER boys have to travel to WALLACEBURG on Thursday night to play the* league leaders, the MOHAWKS tried to get the Fri day game postponed ’until Saturday. But MR. R. G. PINCOMBE and COMPANY as, usual wouldn’t go along with the idea, So Friday the Rockets, who won the first meeting of the year by a 7-4 score in Strathroy, will be here to try for win number two, but let’s hope they get a BIG surprise. The big line for the Strathroy club so far this year has been DON EMMS centering JACK Me- CREIGHT and BUDDY EVANS. However, in their last two outings the ROCKETS have" taken it on the chin from WOODSTOCK and WALLACEBURG. Like the tribe they will be out to try to snap their losing streak and get back into the win column. This year STRATHROY has a 27-year-old net- minder by the name of JAMES STRACHAN playing foi' them, This name is familiar to yours truly as I have noticed it in the HOCKEY NEWS a few seasons back. STRACHAN has been around the AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE a number of years. He used to play goal for the SPRINGFIELD INDIANS of the A.H.L, and from there he moved his gear to the SYRACUSE WARRIORS’ stamping grounds in ’52- ’53. So, the town of Strathroy will be bringing its ♦‘high-priced” hockey club into Exeter oh Friday for a game which should provide plenty of action. . 4r ' ★ V * ★ ; CUFF CLEANERS—JUNIOR DARES picked up ’ seven stitches in his forehead against St. Thomas when he was' hit with a flying puck . . . The LIONS CLUB of EXETER has started off “RED” SCOTT’S fund with a sizeable donation and anyone else who would like to contribute' a dollar of two is asked to drdp it into Scott’s Billiards or into yours truly’s office and we’ll see that it goes to the right party . . . That was a nice piece of work turned in by DICK Me FALLS of Exeter who is playing with the ZURICH FLYERS in the WOAA INTERMEDIATE LEAGUE when he blanked the- LUCAN IRISH by a score of 2-0 to gain his first shutout of the season. ★ * * T’OTHER CUFF—Basketball is in the spotlight once?again even though it seems to get little support around here. BILL BATTEN stopped long enough at our office door to tell us that a team by the name of the ZURICH HUSTLERS are now operating. The HUSTLERS tangled with the CENTRALIA FLYERS at the airport gym only to go down to a 71-58 de feat. Although the six-men strong HUSTLERS out- hustled the Flyers by a 46-41 score at half time the ah' force crew proved too much for them in the last half of the game. DON O’BRIEN, BILL YUNGBLUTT, BOB FLETCHER, ED DIECHERT and DOUG O’BRIEN, along with BATTEN, make up the team(?)» One re port of the game said that the Centralia boys “ran them into the floor.” Speaking of floorj the Zurich team is waiting for some ambitious character to start scrubbing the Zurich gym floor so that home games can get under way. New baskets and even basketballs will be used this year. ONLY 10 MORE SHOPPING DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS! ■-.: f- Loader Shakes Up Tribe For Battle With Rockets Exeter Mohawks, Senior “B” entry in the O.H.A. league, are now lodged in the cellar oi the six team loop as a result of drop ping their only game of the week to the St. Thomas Royals on home ice last Friday night. The comparatively light two- week schedule for the tribe has now ended and the team will be moving into three-game a- i week action. Due to the lapse in the O.H.A. schedule, every team in the league has played at least [two more games than the Mo hawks. After that disastrous 6-3 beat ing suffered at the hands of the St. Thomas Royals, plating coach “Red” Loader has put his charges through a pair of tough practices in an attempt to find the scoring ’ punch the tribe needs. , Loadei* has been working on line changes which will spread more scoring power over all three Exeter offensive units in order to break off the four-game losing streak the tribe is now riding. Although the long road trip to Wallaceburg comes this Thurs day night, “Red” promises to have a hustling bunch of hockey players here at home on Friday night against the Strathroy Rock ets. Wallaceburg Hornets are still setting the pace as they defeat ed Strathroy and Woodstock to hoist themselves a full five points ahead of their closest riv als, the Rockets,’ who recorded a 1-2 win-loss record this week. Woodstock Athletics registered aii important overtime 4-3 vic tory over Sarnia CV’s in the bordef t city on Don Hartung’s goal with less than a minute to play in the game, The win leaves the Woodstock club only one point back of the third' place GV s with one game in hand. Frank Stars For Royals Frankie Anderson, the heavy- set Negro* star of the ice lanes who played for the Exeter Mo hawks two years ago, came back to haunt his former teammates^ by scoring a hat trick to lead St. Thomas Royals to a 6-3 decision Over the Tribe in a Senior “B” game here on Friday night. ' The victory hoisted the Royals out of the. cellar position for the first time this year and dropped the tailspinning Mohawks into undisputed plhce of the last spot, ; The Exeter club, which now has lost four games in a row started off as though they really 1 meant business. Just <33 seconds after the game had started, opportunist Larry ' Heideman bagged the initial i counter of the game when he 1 reached and lifted a loose puck- into the twine behind goaltender ■ Ed Lochhead. : Bill MacDonald and Bill Oberle, 1 who had been buzzing all around i the St. Thomas net from the drop of the opening faceoff, received ' assists on the play. Fifty-five seconds after the : Mohawk penalty and when the t Tribe was applying the power i around the St. Thomas goal, Harry Bentley fired a long clear-. ' ing pass up to Art Sullivan, who had sneaked behind the Mohawk • defence brigade, and* Sullivan1 went in unmolested on goal tender Ron Salter and beat him cleanly with a high rising back hand shot to the top left hand corner of the net. Cecil Cowie put the visiting Royals one goal ' up when, he batted in Defenceman Herb Kew- ley’s rebound shot at 10.56. Four seconds after “Black Jack”' Dwyer had returned from ■ serving a tripping penalty, Frankie Anderson slid a slow shot from close in along the ice ---------- ........ that hit the goal post and deflect- key at the local arena saw the ed over the goal line for The third bantam Canadians team beating straight Royal marker of the ” “ period. The Mohawks, down 3-1, came charging right back in the second period and dominated the major ity of the play but could only capitalize for one* goal, “Black Jack” Dwyer won the scoring honors this time, while Bill Oberle drew an assist after setting up the play. St, Thomas drew all four penalties handed out by Referees Gus Boussey - and Abe McLean in the second period, but the Tribe could only take advantage of one of the penalties handed out. The second ■ period saw each team miss a numbei' of excep tional scoring chapces. Goal posts, legs, sticks, .arms and what have you always got in the way just when i.t looked as though someone was going to score. The third period was no excep tion. Erratic shooting on the part of the Mohawks prevented them from taking the lead away from the St. Thomas entry, It wasn’t until exactly half-way through the final period that Frankie Anderson flashed the light for his second of three goals. Joe Pelesh, ex-London Briggs player; passed a sizzler to the opportunist in front of the Exeter cage, and he trickled it into the net between Ron Salter’s legs. Exeter’s Billy MacDonald put the Mohawks right back in the game at 15.13 -by capitalizing on a play with Bill Oberle and lanky Larry Heideman. It was a 4-3 hockey game' with Exeter coming close to tying the score on several occasions but when Frankie Anderson scored his third goal of the game from behind the Exeter net, it took some of the punch out of t)he Tribe’s attack. ? Anderson’s passout from be hind goaltender Ron. Salter’s cage hit one of the Mohawk blue- line defenders and glanced into the net. Art Sullivan’s Seconcl;. goal of the game, less than’h- minute later put the game on ice fqr St. Thomas with ’less than two min utes to play in the game.
