Chocolate 53c Z Another spring and summer season -is -about -to open -at Lake Huron’s most popular resort— Grand Bend, This 1956 season appears to offer a vastly improv ed resort, and, particularly at Lake Casino, which now remains ■the only resort ballroom which is open'every night until Labor Day. This fact does seem to remain ■in people’s minds; and it just seems so natural that “The Cas ino” is always where it is, and taken for granted that it is al ways open, although some thought should be given to the ■terriffic expense “The Old Stand by” has to provide, which in many ways, is a service both to the resort generally, and -to the sur rounding 'community. One can always say, without 'hesitation, that Lakeview .Casino is a nice place to dance—the pat ronage 'has always -been the (best. The present owner, .Eric McIlroy, has managed this ballroom for 19 years and has carried on a business which was always well managed and established by the late 'George -Eccleston and Mrs. __ __ _____, ___ ____ _Eccleston, who, indeed, were real1 present day .there have been so pioneers of Grand Bend. Stop for a moment and look back, fathers and mothers, and boys and girls, and even to-day you will see many of your Can adian TV stars, who, in almost recent years, have been part of the entertainment at Lakeview Casino. 'Howard Cable, who wrote many of -the Willis Tipping or chestrations; Bob Farnon, a top BBC and OBC musical director, was part of the Brian Farnon orchestra; Rudy Toth, pianist and director on CBC was with the iStan Patton orchestra; Jimmy Namaro, the greatest showman ever to appear -with his orchestra at the Casino; Bert Niosi spent many seasons at Grand Bend; Gordon -Delamont, one Of our top ■musical teachers; Neil Mackay now lias his Master’s degree in music and annually is winning more honors; Mart Kenny, Art Hallman, Len. Hopkins, Wright Bros. '('Don of Don Wright Chorus Ernie, Clarke and Bill); really, one could go on and on, but, starting with Gtiy Lombardo in 1917 and '1918, right up to the many fine musicians and person alities, it would take columns to even present names. Getting back to the present, one can only judge a (business on its past record, and nowhere in this wide 'Canada will a better record for a resort ballroom -be found. 'Season 19 56 is one in which we -are presenting a new orches tra, and we mean just that. Few have -heard -them, 'but many -thousands -are going to dan-ce to them -in the next few years. Here is a bandleader, Cliff. Scanlon, who reminds us of the noiw-.gre.at Lawrence Welk, who always was great, but TV brought him con tinent-wide recognition, Scanlon had an idea, and a very definate one, of a sweet, tuneful orches tra, emphasizing the MELODY, and he is going -to present his version 'of -what he think-s "by way of a fine group of hand-picked musicians, thu’s: Leader — CLIFF. SCANLON, plays accordion. Piano — Dalt Walpole, was pianist with the Don Wiright Chorus, heard -over CBC. Trumpet — Bobby Gardiner, Tor onto, Stratford and Waterloo Festival winner, ONE. gold med alist in 19 49. Trumpet — Dave Bentley, Fes tival winer, duets with Bob Gar diner; top honors in all, competi tions; plays with Martin Boundy’s radio orchestra. Trombone — Gerry Scanlon, cousin of Cliff. Drums — Ed. Cowie, played with Len Hopkin’s Orchestra and Moxie Whitney band. (adv’t) SUPER WHITE resists yellowing, is completely washable At last, a fine quality paint that will not fade or yellow.
