"They’re > "They're "They're protests." "Mohawks were in the peak of condition earlier in the season. Now the other teams are rolling just when Exeter starts to slip,” Whatever the reason, the Tribe is definitely pn the skids. The high-flying braves, who lost only-four of their first 21 con tests, are struggling to get out of a four-game losing string, Moltawk officials console them selves with the thought that it's a good time to have a slump now than in the playoffs. The only problem left now is to get the club out of it. Fortunately, Mohawks’ head start early in the season has made it possible for them to puffer the losses and still hang onto first -place, Although the red-hot rockets from Strathroy ’are only three points behind the Tribe, Red Loader’s crew needs only three wins to clinch their first group title. The Rockets are really zoom ing. After pasting. Mohawks 6-1 Friday * night and Forest Lake sides 12-5 Friday night, the Strathroy crew continued their onslaught with a 9-2 drubbing of Goderich Tuesday night. Milverton Royals’ 7-4 win over Mohawks Tuesday puts them in sole' possession of third place, two points ahead - of the Sailors. The Royals, who still have a chance to overtake Strathroy for second place, will meet. Rockets Saturday night in what promises to he a good battle. ■Coach ’Red Loader called a practice Wednesday to work his charges out of their Blump be fore Friday night when they tackle the Sailors in Goderich, The Sailors will hav’e to prove to their home town that they’re not out of the running so they’ll ibe after Mohawks’ hide, With Mo hawks getting desperately hun gry, the battle should be a dandy. The Tribe meets Rockets in Strathroy Tuesday night,in what could prove tos be the group- winning contest. Rpyals Win Return Tilt .NEW SHIPMENT! After the Royals took a 1-0 lead in the first period, Mohawks rallied to go ahead 2-1 early in the second on goals by Bill “Oberle and Larry Heideman. Be fore the period was over, how ever, the Royals banged in three to make it 4-2 in their favor. Milvertdn spoiled Exeter’s ■chances of recovering early in the third by scoring three fast tallies. Before seven minutes had passed by, Doxxg Thiel, Jerry Mc Millan and Junior Dares scored the clinching markers. , Red Loader and Jack Dwyer potted counters near the end of the stanza to give the score a better flavor. Both clubs were shotthanded. Barton and Wharnsby were home sick for Mohawks and Bo'bby Gaul and Gus McDermid were absent from the Milverton roster. The Tribe suffered foui' penal ties in the first period. The first three came in rapid succession after the first minute of play. Larry McCallum scored the first goal of the game at 17.51 when he flipped a rebound past Baker after the Exeter netminder stop ped five shots. Bill Oberle opened the second period' by taking a beautiful pass from Dwyer at 17 seconds and sinking it in the webbing. Oberle fed Heideman a pass at 7.12 which sent’ the lanky centreman in past the Milventon from where he rifled Ra.beth.ge. Two of Milverton’s period tallies were scored on re bounds; Dares scored the third on a breakaway. The three Royal goals in the third disorganized Mohawks but they came back later in the period to beat (Rabethge twice. Jack McIntyre,' a new Mohawk recruit from RCAF Centralia, played his first game and earned an assist. Rampaging Royals Down Tribe 9-4 .Milverton scored five’goals in the 10 minutes of the third peri od Saturday night to romp to a 9-4 victory over - hawks. It was the third straight loss foi* the tribe. . The rampaging Royals, theh sites on second spot, took a 2-1 lead in the first .period and matte it 4-2 in the second. Junior iDares led the third period splurge with a hat trick. The Tribe played the .last part of the game without .Earl Barton, who suffered -a stomach injury. Dick McFalls, who replaced Baker in the local nets, kicked out a lot of rubber hut couldn’t stop the Milverton avalanche. After the game, was lost, iCoach Loader experimented with differ ent combinations in an effort to get his charges out of their slump. The fact that a number of Mo hawks were awake until the wee small hours at the protest hear ing the night before, and that they had played a bruising ’con test with the (Rockets -before that didn’t help Exeter’s cause. -Glen Wiese scored the first Mohawk goal unassisted. Oberle scored the second on a play with Loader and (Richards. The junior line potted two in the third, Heideman and Wharns- by netting the rubber. Vivian with 10 points was best for Mitchell. S.outh Huron guards Faye Ford, Judy Ross, Marilyn Mar shall, Manion Creery and Marnie Sanders set up an amazingingly •strong defence. 'South Huron Panthers, senior and junior, split a two-game basketball series with Mitchell in the Perth county town Monday afternoon. Rockets Fly In 6-1 Win Strathroy Rockets, perhaps feeling sheepish over their1 man agement’s protest, set out to prove Friday night they could beat Mohawks on ice, if not on paper, and they were success ful—very successful. Against the slumping (Mo hawks, the darting Rockets ap peared to be/fused with dynamite and powered hy atomic dust as they set the Tribe back on a 6-1 score. The return of (Harvey Jes- siman .to the (Rockets’ pipes and Ray Yelle to the rearguard squad, along with Don Emms’ brilliant two-way play, fired the second- place clu'b. As against Goderich, ’Mohawks spotted the Rockets three goals early in the first period. Emms, Emmons and 'Gaudette made it 3-*0 in eight minutes. For the next 20 minutes, Mo hawks held their own although they goofed some dandy oppor tunities, Jessiman was the stumb ling block of old. Starting just after the 10-min- ute mark of the second, IRockets enjoyed another three-goal out burst. Max Faljo'wfield started it and Junior Barash .potted 'the next two. The former Zurich^star couldn’t resist taking one of .his graceful bows before the (booing crowd. Bill O'berle potted Mohawks lone tally in the third. Ted (Bogai fought for the rubber behind the net and passed it out to the* left winger who spoiled Jessiman’s shutout bid. iSince the outcome of the game now appeared certain the play ers took wrestling s£o entertain the crowd. Don Fulton, who seems to enjoy battling with the smallest opponent he can find, rammed his old foe Red Loader into the boards at 11,45 to start a three-way 'brawl. After (Loader had his punches at the Strathroy defenceman, another of Fulton’s Exeter rivals, Doug Smith, jump ed iii' to get his licks in 'while he could. Loader and Fulton tangled again after that one was stopped. Fulton left the ice with two majors and a misconduct; .Loader received one major and miscon duct; Smith got a misconduct. JThree minutes later, .Barash and Barton ’tangled in a brief exchange in 'which Barton’s eye was cut requiring stitches. What was .left of the clubs finished the game without further excitement.
