'Potato Bug' Amuses'
,000
When Rain Stops Air Show
RCAF Centralia doesn't need
to fly to give the public a good
Show.
This was proved Saturday
When the station entertained
7,000 visitors in its hangars after
rain had cancelled the outstand-
ing air show planned for the day,
A mechanical "potato bug"
took featured spot in the program
when the jets failed to fly.
Engineered by the telecommuni-
cation section, the radio -con-
trolled bug performed for hund-
reds in its domain in the middle
of one of the hangars.
The machine was cleverly de-
signed to illustrate how modern
guided missiles operate. A three -
wheeled cart decorated in the
form of a red and plack potato
bug, with a swivel head, spark-
ling eyes and antennae feelers, it
contained its own power plant
and a radio receiver with four
relays which were controlled by
the transmitter on an •island. Two
of the relays tied into the drive
motor for forward and reverse
and the other two operated a
turning 'motor for direction.
The bug wandered in and out
of its earthen home, around the
trees of its domain to feed on its
"potato chips" and "potato bug
juice." The skillful display was
engineered by Warrant Officer S.
M. Estwiek.
Excellent Displays
A$ usal, the indoor displays
were excellent as the sections out-
did each other in imaginative
exhibits to show the instruments
and equipment they work with
and how they use them.
The Search and Rescue crews
portrayed realistic scenes of plane
crashes and the ingenuity of the
RCAF to face survival in the
Arctic and forests in summer and
winter. The Ground 'Defence sec-
tion displayed the modern wea-
pons it would use to stave off
enemy attaoks on the station.
Pre - Flight, Instrument and
Flying Training Schools showed
off their facilities. The Meteoro-
logical Section told visitors how
weather was determined and how
to read forecasts.
The photo section,, hobby shop,
sports and education centres dis-
played their parts in the Air
Force Program.
Modified Air Show
Despite the rain, there was a
modified air show. The RCAF's
new N e p tun e, a two -engined
maritime observer craft, and a
North Star performed, along with
the Harvards and Expeditors.
Hundreds of people inspected a
T-33 jet trainer, flown :from the
west by `Flying Officer Chris
Frost, and the North Star before
it took off. Five Vampire Jets
were- on display, too.
If action was curtailed on the
main flying front, it wasn't in
the miniature field. Model air-
craft enthusiasts put their whin-
ing gas -driven craft through
dog-fights and aerobatle man-
oeuvres.
Three bands which seranaded
the crowd included the stations
own trumpet band and two air
cadet organizations.Circus rides
and baby-sitting centres • enter-
tained the children.
Group Captain W. W. Newsom,
Commanding Officer of the
Station, welcomed the visitors.
