CLINTON NEWS r,BC0111), THVBSDAY, DECEMBER, 5, 1974,7PAOE
The following is a letter
received by the Bayfield Lions
Club from Brian McGrath of
Australia.
Project Won Mt
International Relations;
The members of the Bardon
Lions Club of District 201 Kin
the month of October, 1974 par-
took in one of the, best inter-
national project in their seven
year history of their club,
Their international relations
Chairman, Brian McGrath ad-
vised them that he had received
advice that a Canadian Lion
was ill in Mount Olivet
Hospital in Brisbane. Mount
Olivet Hospital, by the way, is a
hospital for the incurably sick,
in Brisbane; Australia. An ob-
servant Lions lady, Janet An-
dersen from the Gap Lions
Club, who is a nursing sister at
the hospital, advised Lion
Brian McGrath that a patient
by the name of Alf Morris
received a "get well" card from
the Bayfield Lions Club in On-
tario, Canada, and had no
visitors.
The members of the Bardon
Lions Club promptly visited
Mr. Morris and established
that Alf was a member of the
Bayfield Lions Club. In con-
sultation with his Doctor, Dr.
Kaye, and the nursing staff, it
was realized that not too much
information was available on
Lion Alf. Limited information
was available from letters, and
seeing Lion Alf had difficulty in
communicating because he suf-
fered a brain tumor, different
contacts were established.
Members found out that Lion
Alf, a retired secretary of the
Y.M.C.A. in Canada, was on a
holiday in. Australia. While in
Brisbane he took ill during a
visit to a friend's home, and
consequently was admitted to
the Brisbane General Hospital,
and subsequently was tran-
sferred to Mount Olivet
Hospital for the Incurably Sick.
Contacts were established
with different people and
organizations, because the
hospital authorities believed
that Lion Ale's next of kin and
relations would appTeciate his
t r a4n s f r',,ifTilt*is • s101414is'e ,
Austrelia, Seeing
that Lion Alf had less than four
weeks to live.
The Bardon Lions Club con-
tacted the; (a) local Y.M.C.A.
and their National Secretary
Harold Jenner in Melbourne;
(b) the Canadian Consul
General, Mr. Browne in Syd-
ney; (c) his Brisbane friend, a
Mrs, Conway of 55 Agnew St.
Norman Park. '
While visiting Lion Alf, the
members of the Bardon Lions
Club met a Mr. Funara
Pasquale of 422 Henry St,
Ascot, who visited him daily.
Mr. Pasquale himself was a
patient at the Royal Brisbane
Hospital in the next bed to
Lion Alf, and quickly realized
that Lion Alf had no friends or
visitors, and therefore took it
upon himself to ensure that
Lion Alf at all times would
haye company during visiting
hours. This in itself showed a
tremendous community spirit
and unselfishness by Mr.
Pasquale. His actions should be
a stimulation to any Lion.
It is needless to say that im-
mediately after his first visit by
• the Lions, a letter was forwar,
'tied by the District Chairman
Brian McGrath to the Bayfield
Lions Club. On Oct. 9 Lion
Tony Kennish and Henk Hor-
chner received the good news
that Lion Alf was to be moved
by plane to his home in Canada
by stretcher, and accompanied
by Dr. Kaye. The excitement
was nearly dampened when
Lion Alf took a turn for the
worse on the Wednesday night
f Oct. 9. All systems were "go"
tiring visiting hours however,
nd the spirits were very high
hen Lion Alf was able to eom-
tinicate for the first time with
e members of the Bardon
'ons Club. Although Lion Alf
(loch and Mr, Youmatoff
thanked the Club for their very
kind invitation and the mem-
bers enjoyed their very brief
and witty remarks, The
president thanked the Ladies
UCW for their splendid dinner
and Mrs, Ruth Makins on
behalf of the workers, very
graciously accepted the thanks.
Euchre was played following
the dinner and the lucky win-
ners were Mrs, Vine Parker,
Mrs. Pearl Westlake, Roy Scot-
.chrrier and Lloyd Makina. Mrs,
Vina Parker won the lone hand
prize,
The next regular meeting of

The members immediately
contacted the Lions in Sydney
via Cabinet Treasurer of 201B,
Lions Lady Pat Coleman, to en-
sure that one or two Lions
would meet the plane in Syd-
ney enroute to Toronto, The
Bayfield Lions Club was
cabled, giving his estimated
time of arrival in Toronto.
Lion Henk Horchner and
Lion; Brian McGrath at 6 a.m,
on Friday Oct. 11, met Dr,
Kaye and Lion Alf on a stret-
cher at Brisbane Airport and
saw him off safe and sound on
T.A.A. flight 411 to Sydney.
During the flight to Sydney a
Rotarian, a passenger on the
plane stood 'by to assist Dr.
Kaye if required.
On arrival in Sydney, Lion
Peter and his Lady Pat
Coleman of Sydney Central met
the plane and assisted the am-
bulance bearers in the transfer
from T.A.A. to Quantas flight
586 for Vancouver. Their
presence and well wishes as
Lions were a great
psychological stimulation to
Lion Airs spirits.
Quantas staff are to be
congratulated on their ex-
cellence in organization and
service. Teams of doctors and
ambulances were on hand at
Sydney, Tahiti and Los Angeles
and the transfer at Vancouver
to Air Canada flight 160 went
off without a hitch, On arrival
at Toronto, the ambulance took
Dr. Kaye and LionAlf direct to
the University Hospital, Lon-
don, Ont., an estimated
distance of 100 miles. The
members of Bardon Lions Club
do-not know if it is significant,
but would like to believe so.
Lion Alf arrived home the day
before Thanksgiving.
Dr. Kaye, on his return to
Australia, after spending only
19 hours in Canada, reported
that Lion Alf recognized his
niece, Mrs. Norman
F,(Patricia) Cooper of Bayfield
and Metiit, OlAnths, Mich.,
who was the main driving force
in the return of Alf, The
reunion we would like to leave
to the individual's imagination.
Dr. Kaye immediately commen-
ced work for a full day on his
return to Brisbane and did not
obtain his well earned rest un-
til Monday night, a truly
dedicated doctor.
On the Wednesday morning a
cablegram was received by the
members of the Bardon Lions
Club --"ALF MORRIS

SITY HOSPITAL LONDON,

FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE.
THE BAYFIELD LIONS
CLUB, BAYFIELD, ON-

they believe is only a start to a
strong nternational bond bet-
ween two small clubs under the
leadership of President Reg
McGu re of the Bardon Lions
Club and President John Mer-
ner of the Bayfield Lions Clubn
brought together by the ill for-
tune of one lonly ill Lion, Alf
Morris.
