"Canadians should not react
in anger to the punitive quotas
on beef and pork imposed by
the United States this weekend,
But neither should Canada
back down and open its borders
to flood of U.S, beef, eggs and
turkey," Gordon Hill of Verna
president of the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture,
stated last week.
"The Canadian government
must stick to its guns or
Canadian trade policy will be
set in the United States from
now on," Hill says.
"This is a time for Canadian
meat producers to stick
together."
The United. States Market is
10 times as big as Canada's, A
small percentage of U.S,
production is large enough to
swamp the Canadian market.
Even a large percentage of
Canadian production would
have little effect on the large
U.S. market, Hill points out.
Yet, Canada's quota on live
cattle imports from the United
States was more generous. It is
equal tb the full five-year
average of imports from 1969-
73,
In return the U.S. slashed
imports of Canadian cattle and
dressed beef to a small percen-
tage of Canada's normal ex-
ports.
Although Canada imposed
no quota on hog imports from
the U.S., that country cut
Canadian hog imports nearly in
half.
"U.S. cattle build-up was ac-
celerated by the •price freeze

Canadians to pay for its
With Christmas on its way
and retail prices at an all time
high, this may be the year to
explore alternative shopping op-
portunities. Factory outlet stores
should be high on your list.
A factory outlet store is ex-
actly what the name implies.
It is a store, established by a
factory to sell off products that,
for one reason or another, have
not been wholesaled.
The sharp consumer who is
willing to invest the extra thil,Sa
and effort will find some ter:
rifle bargains.
You can ex-
pect to save

on such items
as shoes;
clothing, ap-
pliances and
dinner and glassware. And
many of these items make
great gifts.
But, keep in mind you'll be
shopping under less than' ideal
conditions. There will only be
the factory's brand to choose
from. Few outlets have alter-
ation Jacilities, and still fewer
accept checks and credit cards.
And the goods featured may
be "seconds" or styles that
proved to be unpopular.
As in any bargain situation,
you must exercise good judg-
ment before you buy. Inspect
the merchandise carefully for
defects. Keep in mind that gen-
erally, all sales are final.
For a listing of factory out-
let stores in your area, contact
your local or state Chamber
of Commerce.
