Ontario's winter weather is not exactly routine but there's no guesswork involved in the preparation for the 'Onslaught. It's based on past weather pat- terns, enabling men and equip- ment to be on standby from the earliest possible date. There's a virtual army - 4,500 men backed by 14 gigan- tic snow blowers which are the big guns of the fleet of 2,500 vehicles used for winter main- tenance, including more than 700 sand and salt spreaders and 850 pieces of backup equip. ment. Seven of the self-propelled snow blowers are located in the snow-belt areas of Owen Sound and Stratford Districts while the others are located in heavy snow areas. The most familiar of the snow plows is the five-ton truck with its nine-foot blade in,front and 12-foot wing blade On the side for plowing shoulders. All are equipped with the flashing blue light which has become the symbol of winter main- tenance equipment in highway operations., Tandem plowing of multi- lane freeways and expressways has speeded up plowing of these highways. In the Toronto area, this means that 24 plows working in tandem can clear the 17 miles of the 12-lane Toronto By-pass of Highway 401 in a matter of two hours. A high degree of flexibility is maintained so that if one area of the province is particularly hard hit, neighbouring districts can move in men and equip- ment to help with the clean-up. By the time this winter is over, approximately 400,000 tons of salt and 900,000 tons of sand will have been applied to our highway system. Approximately one-half the required 'sand supply is' stored in strategic locations across the province in dome-like buildings known as Fitzpatrick domes af- ter the now-retired employee John Fitzpatrick who designed them. Winter road reporting As of Nov. 4, Ontario motorists can pick up a phone and call 18 MTC centres across the province to get reports on weather and road conditions on any of the 13,000 miles of provincial highways. It's the Ministry's Winter Road Reporting Service which goes into operation each Your furnace is probably the most expensive appliance you own. And it may well last the longest providing you are will- ing to perform routine mainte- nance about twice a year. Older wood and coal fur- naces rarely require more than periodic cleaning. Gas and oil furnaces, however, will require more substantial maintenance. Unless yours is a self-lubri- cating model, you will need to apply grease and oil regularly. The motor will probably have oil ducts in plain view. If not, consult your owner's manual. Auto- motive engine oil is perfect for the job, but exercise care against using too much. One or two drops per duct is usually adequate. The blower unit runs on bearings which also need at- tention. Auto bearing grease should be applied to prevent malfunction. And if there are oil ducts, add a few drops there, too. The air filter should be changed whenever it is dirty, usually at least twice a year, And if yours is an oil burning furnace, you'll also need to re- place the oil filter, Inspect the fan belt regularly. When the rubber begins to crack and wear, replace it. ' These simple chores should keep your home's heat machine in top condition, If problems develop, though, don't hesitate to call in a reputable service man.
