Rumors floating out of the
Signal-Star Paper Leaf training
quarters are causing a great
deal of excitement in the
hockey circles of Goderich. The
bookies have started taking
bets on the game with Detroit
and the odds are 1,000 to one
that the Leafs will lose but
their fans are still willing to bet
on them.
The Leafs have what the
bookies don't consider when
they set the odds. Moxie!
The Leafs have a lot of
moxie. Coach Ed Byrski has
been working closely with his
players and not only has taught
them hockey skills they never
knew existed but he has taught
them to believe.
He can be heard screaming at
his players in the early morning
practices at the Goderich
Arena. "You gotta believe!"
The players do believe.
Talking with them recently the
Signal reporters have asked
them what their chances are of
winning the game, Here are
their answers..
Coach Ed Byrski thinks his
boys are as good as the Red
Wings and that the game is up
for grabs. He said the team that
wins will be the team that
believed.
Trainer Howard Aitken feels
that the Leafs are 100 percent
better than they were last, year
and that gives them a 100 per-
cent better chance of winning
the Red Wing game.
Trainer Gary Haist said that
injuries have taken a toll in the
training program but the size of
the Leaf muscles he massages
would make him think they can
be strong.
Team captain John
Buchanan said his team had to
win sooner or later because
they are due for a victory. He
feels it may as well be the Red
Wings that get beaten as any
one else.
Centre Tom Flynn feels that
any team that has a Newfie line
on it can take on the best of
them and come out on top. He
said that playing close to a
large body of water like Lake
Huron will be an 'asset to his
line.
Import centre Gary Loewen
feels that his new club is like
the Miami Dolphins. No names
one year and stars the next. He
feels the Leafs young legs may
have a bearing on the outcome.
Winger Lloyd Lou nsbury
says that if the Red Wing Old-
timers feel like he does then
they are a cinch to lose. Lloyd
is the Paper Leaf Oldtimer,
Defenceman George Vander-
--burgh has 'little dotibt that the'
Wings will be hard to stop but
says that any defence that can
stand up to the constant Paper
Leaf assault can stand up to
the NHL. George has been a
regular on the Leaf blue line
since the team's inception into
the Benefit League,
The main man in the Leaf
strategy, goalie Davie Williams,
feels that the NHL shooters
will not be hard to stop. He
plans to keep talking to the
Wings in such a way that they
will be trying to hit him with
the puck rather than shoot
around him.
The rest of the Leaf's are
equally as confident of a vie.
tory on Sunday, They all have
definite opinions on why they
will beat. Detroit and certainly
are displaying the moxie that
Ed Byrski has been trying to
instill in them.
The Detroit Red Wing Old
Timers have a great deal to say
in the outcome of Sunday's
game however. They are
pleased with the odds set by the
Goderich bookies and some
players even go as far as saying
there is not a big enough
spread.
The Leaf spy sent down to
the Detroit camp has been
feeding a great deal of infor-
mation back to Coach Byrski
and it does not sound good,
The Red Wings are prac-
ticing regularly and are doing
strange things, The spy reports
that they have changed the
shape of their goalie from the
usual rectangle formed by the
large pads to a shape that
resembles a leaf and that they
are shooting the puck as hard
as they tan right at the goalie.
The agent reports that the
Wings get an extra serving of
Dream Whip at the training
table if they put the puck
through the leaf.
The Red Wings also scrim-
mage against each other in
practices and divide themselves
into two teams. One team puts
on different colored sweaters
and the spy reports that when
the coach orders the rookies to
wear the green sweaters, which
are the Leaf colors, the
veterans get so hostile they
have to be sent to the dressing
room for a shower and a bowl
of jello.
The Red Wing Oldtimers are
reported to be somewhat
culture conscious and their
coach is using this fact as a
weapon against the Leafs.
He sent a Red Wing player to
Goderich disguised as a talent
scout and the man recorded the
Paper Leaf choir singing for
their breakfast. The scout took
the record back to the Red
Wing headquarters and 'the
Detroit players are so upset at
the lack of ability for music the
Leafs have that they are
making plans to do things on
the ice that will raise each Leaf
voice at least one octave.
Ed Byrski is. not upset at
these threats coming out of Red
Wing headquarters. He is using
them to spur his team on to
greater things. He posts the
press clippings of the Red Wing
actions in his team's dressing
rooms and keeps shouting at
them that what the Wings are
really saying is that the Leafs
mothers wear army boots.
The trick is working. One
Leaf got so upset he brushed
his teeth with shaving cream,
and used the team bottle of
Woolite for shaving lotion. His
beard got so curly he looked
like a walking Brillo pad.
Injuries have plagued the
Leaf lineup. Tom "Dash"
Flynn had a collision with one
of his fellow players in a team
practice and broke his nose.
Dash is the kingpin of the
Newfie line and Byrski says
that the centre has a nose for
the puck but may have to
change that to "had" a nose for
the puck.
Goalie Dave Williams put his
arm in front of a high wrist
shot in practice last week and
bruised it badly, He went to the
team doctor and had his elbow
drained of fluid, But he says he
will be ready for the big game.
Coach Byrski commented that
a little plumbing may not be a
bad idea for, some of his other
players.
George Vanderburgh fell into
the boards in a practice and
strained his wrist. He taped the
joint up and has been exer-
cising all week crushing pucks.
George says the wrist is 100
percent and that he will be on
the blue line on Sunday defen-
ding the Leaf goal.
Time is drawing short for
players and fans alike. Tickets
have been disappearing fast
and if you haven't got yours
you had better pick it up today.
Game time is 2:00 p.m. Novem-
ber 24 at the Goderich Arena
and all proceeds are going to
Goderich Meals on Wheels.
