Brief Encounter
starring Sophia Loren.Richard Burton
Sophia Loren and Richard Burton star together
in the new film production of Noel Coward's world-
famous BRIEF ENCOUNTER, airing Tuesday,
November 12, 7:30-9:00 p.m. on CKCO-TV.
BRIEF ENCOUNTER is one of the most tender
stories of middle-aged romance ever written and is
as timeless now as when it was first produced on
stage as "Still Life" with Gertrude Lawrence and
Noel Coward playing the two principal characters,
This is the story of Anna Jesson, (Sophia Loren)
and Alec Harvey (Richard Burton) who meet by
chance at a railway station and find themselves
mutually attracted. Over the next few weeks they
fall in love, despite their own better judgement. The
chance meetings become arranged, and Anna is
unable to resist Alec,•although her feelings for her
husband and two children have not changed.
She allows herself to be persuaded to go to his
friend's vacant apartment where Alec tells her of
his opportunity for a job in Australia. He wants her
to go with him, but while they are talking the friend
unexpectedly shows up, leaving Anna feeling
humiliated and exposed.
Produced by Cecil Clarke with Executive
Producer Duane Bogie, BRIEF ENCOUNTER is a
screen reunion for Sophia Loren and Richard Bur-
ton, two major stars who have been friends for well
over a dozen years since their appearance together
in "Voyage".
The success that both of them have had in motion
pictures, have made them known to audiences not
only in their native countries, but in North America
and internationally. Both are Academy Award win-
ners'.
Heritage - Italy
where the past lingers on
The lure of Italy is strong. The past lingers on, is
preserved and revered. To those raised in Western
Civilization, Italy gives a sense of homecoming. In
recent years, there have been more people visiting
Italy than there are people in Canada. By 1980,
Italy is expected to accommodate more tourists
than there are even natives. But Italy is a country
of extremes and a potentially dangerous imbalance
exists between the rich and the poor. Producer Bill
Fruet travelled to Italy to examine the lifestyles
and cultures of the land and the people who are the
subject for the next fascinating HERITAGE episode
entitled ITALY, airing Tuesday, November 5, 9:00-
10:00 p.m. on CKCO-TV.
Canada is the country that lured many native
Italians from their villages seeking the chance to
work and profit by their• labour. There are many
who remained. Servilio Leali is one who stayed
behind. For seven years now he has been working to
restore the monastery of San Bernedetto Po back to
its original form. He relies on his knowledge of con-
struction and his instinct as a mason and bit by bit
he has unravelled the mysteries concerning this
monastery that many scholars before him were
unable to answer. Working by his side is his oldest
son, Givilano, who shares the same passion for
discovery. They are the kind of men so totally im-
mersed in their work, that they think nothing of
driving a hundred miles on a Sunday to study the
architecture of some church, rather than spend it as
a day of rest.
They, like so many of their countrymen, believe
that it is Work that gives life its scope, giving
satisfaction and definition to what they do. •
HERITAGE: ITALY is produced by Bill Fruet
with Executive Producer Larry Hertzog, Canada's
best-known cinematographer Richard Leiterman, is
the cameraman. The editor is Aria Saare.
