Commencement exercises held at ;Central Huron Secondary School
Valedictorian at CUSS says graduates must share their knowledge
The following is the address
of Jim Riddell who was the
Valedictorian at the Commen-
cement exercises held at Cen-
tral Huron Secondary School in
Clinton last Friday night:
"On this the .80th commen-
cement, the time has come for
we, the graduating students of
1974, to bid farewell to one
phase of accomplishment and
to mark the realization of a
new period of being, for always
with an end there is a new
beginning.
"Whether our chosen
vocation directs us into the
labour force or to an in-
stituation of higher learning,
our search for knowledge and
success begins anew. In our
continuation for the pursuit of
happiness and fulfillment, new
and important lessons will
most certainly be learned. We
must constantly be open min-
ded and willing to accept in-
struction and criticism from
our peers.
"Let us remember the words
of Henry David Thoreau regar-
ding the lessons of men, "Raise
your child so that he will make
himself do what he knows has
to be done, when it should be
done, whether he likes it or not.
It is the first lesson that ought
to be learned and however
early a man's training begins it
is probably the last lesson he
learns thoroughly.
"One of the most eminent
criticisms of today's generation
is that we lack a great deal of
responsibility and self
discipline.,We must priave this
criticism false, If we are to
discover fulfillment in our
lies, we must take it upbri our-
selves to build up friendship
and consideration for others
and to break down the barriers
i of resentment and mistrust in
this present society. No facet of
life can be enjoyed unless each
ne of us learns that the way to
chievement is by doing. Try to
ut well into practice what you
lready know; in so doing you
ill, in good time, discover the
idden thihgs which now you
nquire about. Now is the time
o decide , in your own mind'
hat commitments, what goals,
hat paths your life will
llow."
"But while deciding this, we
ust consider more than just
urselves. One popular in-
rpretation of life is the belief
" to do your own thing", to
extremely independent, to
a solid individual. While
aintaining a certain amount
this philosophy, we must not
nore the hopes and needs of
r fellow men. Armed with all
r training, we must go out
and be willing to share our
knowledge and experience with
others, as far as we are capable.
We must indeed experience
enough trials to keep us strong;
enough sorrow to keep us
human; enough hope to keep us
happy; enough failure to keep
us humble, and enough faith
and courage in ourselves, our
business, and our country to
banish oppression and to make
each day better than yesterday,
I challenge you to recognize the
fact that involvement is the
catalyst that activates your
knowledge, your skill and your
insight, "For iron rusts from
disuse, stagnant water loses its
purity and in cold weather
becomes frozen; even so does
inaction sap the vigours of the
mind.
"We must remember that the
educational process is indeed a
joint affair, including the ab-
solute co-operation of the
student, the teacher, the
parents, the administration and
the people of the community.
The student should be con-
scientous, objective and eager
to learn, while the teacher must
possess ' genuine interest,
devotion, and concern for all of
his students. Parents should be
fountains of inspiration and
understanding whether their
child experiences success or
failure. Generosity and co-
operation must be secured from
the administration, as well as
obtaining the utmost support
from the community for they
all should contribute to the
education of the student. A
chain is only as strong as its
weakest link. When one link of
this eitenglie chain is deficient,
the entire process is harmed of
which the student's education
ultimately suffers. But we must
all learn by failure or defeat,
for defeat is nothing but
education, nothing but the first
step to something better.
"As we step ahead, let us not
forget the past for it is the
ground work of the future.
Each of us will cherish
memories of our early days.
That special friend, that special
event that somehow is ours
alone for "A man's real
possession is his memory. In
nothing else is he rich. In
nothing else is he poor. ,"Our
school days will contain
noteworthy memories for some
will reminise about that great
game, that special dance or
that fantastic party while
others will call to mind the
trials and tribulations of exams
and the great variety of instruc-
tors they have encountered.
"From grade school to
graduation, year, each teacher
in his or her own way has left
some lasting impression upon
ourselves as have the people we
have come in contact with
throughout our lives, "From
the experience of others, do
thou learn wisdom, and from
their failings, correct thine own
faults.''
"We thank these people and
above all we thank those
special people who worried

o yve must emphasize for it is
.today that we should enjoy to,
its utmost. As Emerson said
"Don't waste life in doubts and
ears, spend yourself on the
IsTork before you, well assured
that, the right preformance of
his hour's duties will be the
best preparation for the hours,
the ages that follow it."
"When we leave tonight and
',he school doors close behind
us, so does a chapter of our life
llose with them. Armed with
knowledge of lessons learned
and of lessons to be learned we
Will, each in our own way
search for our final yet
unknown destiny.
With a steady swing and an
open brow
We have tramped the ways
together
But we're clasping hands at the
crossroads now
In the Fiend's own night for
weather,
And whether we bleed or
whether we smile
In the leagues that lie before us
The ways of life are many a
mile
And the dark of Fate is o'er us
Here's Luck!
And a cheer far the dark before
us!"
