Evans' fourteenth-floor apartment
in the suburbs of Chicago. The
stories are about such down-to-
earth problems as the struggle to
raise the rent and James Jr.'s
problems at school. The stories are
real, dealing in a humourous way
with problems that are faced day-
to-day by many families,

Before his starring role in SAN-
FORD AND SON, comedian
Redd Foxx was seen on television in
guest spots but he had a brilliant
career in other areas of show
business. He had made 49 record
albums which have sold 10 million
in 15 years, He had been a star of
the night-club circuit since the
1940s with his own special brand of
"blue humour" and he was well
known amongst his friends and
acquaintances for his outspoken
comments.
Redd has been entertaining
professionally since he was 13 years
old, when he ran away from home
and joined a band. The group broke
up when World War 11 started and
Redd struck out on his own.
His first nightclub appearance
was at Gamby's in Baltimore.
Although Redd normally performed
as a single, he worked with
comedian Slappy White for five
years in the late 1940s and early
1950s. The late Dinah Washington
urged him to come to California and
Florida Evans and John Amos as
her husband James. Ja'net Dubois
plays Florida's best friend Willona.

season on the Global Television
Network Monday, September 9 at
8:30 p.m.
he was appearing in a Los Angeles
nightclub when he was spotted by
Dootsie Williams who signed him to
Dooto Records. Redd has recorded/
for other companies since and plant
to release his fiftieth album on his
own recording label.
Redd's first network television
appearance was on NBC's Today
show. That was in 1964, and he has
made guest appearances on most of
the television talk shows. In the
film "Cotton Comes to Harlem" he
played an aging junk dealer and
that role inspired executive
producer Bud Yorkin to cast him in •
the SANFORD role.
Redd Foxx's favourite nightclub
spot over the years has been Las
Vegas. He has appeared frequently
at the Las Vegas Hilton and con-
tinues to do 'so when the shooting
schedule of SANFORD AND SON
permits.
In his leisure time, Redd enjoys
painting and wood carving. He is
also proficient in karate.
