Kathy Williamson to host
two new productions
Kathy Williamson has been chosen by John
Spalding, Program Director of the Global
Television Network, to host two new productions in
the network's Fall schedule — THE NUMBER TO
CALL, (Saturdays 8:30 p.m.) and THAT TALK
SHOW (Mondays through Saturdays, 3:30 p.m.).
Kathy came to Global from a three year stint as
host of a highly successful morning show on CBC-
TV in St. John's, Newfoundland. There, with a
limited budget and little prior publicity, she cap-
tured half the early morning audience, even against
such stiff competition as Peter Growski's "This
Country in the Morning" on CBC Radio, CTV's
"Canada A.M." and two open-line radio shows.
Born in Quaker Hill, Pawling, New York, Kathy
grew up with printers' ink flowing in her veins. Her
grandfather founded Reinhold Publishing and
established the popular Gourmet magazine. After
working as a stringer, she took a position with Time
magazine in New York. In 1967 Kathy moved to
Labrador where she settled, in an isolated fishing
village (population 900) There she established a
community newspaper to improve communication
among the villagers. After three years in Labrador,
Kathy moved to St. John's, Newfoundland with her
husband and children. During the course of her
work on the morning information show in that city,
she interviewed more than 500 people and was
responsible for all research for the program as well
as for the booking of guests. While in Newfoun-
dland, Kathy also worked as a radio commentator
covering local politics and public affairs.
Kathy has many hobbies, cooking, writing, collec-
ting antiques, but perhaps her most unusual hobby
is carpentry. She likes to design and make her own
furniture and also to renovate old houses. Before
she was offered the CBC show in St. John's, she had
been involved in the development of a new
publication for St. John's. Called "The Oppor-
tunist", it was designed to stimulate interest in all
aspects of do-it-yourself projects to help beat the
rapid rise in the cost of living. Kathy has now
moved to Toronto's Cabbagetown, which she
believes will be an interesting and stimulating en-
vironment for her two children, Eric (7) and
Alexandra (5).
On THAT TALK SHOW, Kathy will be inter-
viewing guests who will be discussing varied topics
ranging from politics to sex, and will be joined by
co-host Bill Cameron. THE NUMBER TO CALL is
a ninety-minute public affairs show which will give
the viewer an opportunity to participate by phoning
in questions to be answered by guest experts. Kathy
will introduce the guests each week and will ask
questions posed by the viewers. She will also ask
questions and make comments of her own.
Altogether the vivacious auburn-haired Kathy is
looking forward with great excitement to the new
season at Global which she feels will be full of
challenge and opportunity.
