In the Brussels and 'Myth ex-
changes, the increase would be
65 cents a month for an in-
dividual residence line, from
$4.25 to $4.90. An individual
business line would go up from
$7.65 to $8.80.
The company has also filed
for increases in supplementary
rates, service charges and other
rate items, .
G. H. Newton, president of
Maitland Teleservices, said the
step was taken because of rising
costs in every phase of
telephone activity, As an exam-
ple, he said taxes paid to the
municipalities have increased
about 150 per cent in 'the past
two years.
Large sums of money must be
spent in the future to meet the
growing service needs of
customers, Mr. Newton said.
Letters. detailing proposed
changes in telephone rates have
been mailed to all subscribers
of Maitland Teleservices Ltd.

Rocky
Racoon
says ...
Rocky Raccoon has some in-
formation and tips from the
Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority concerning woodlots
and their benefits.
Wood lots and forest cover
play a very important role in
helping to protect the land
from high winds and flooding.
While windbreaks prevent wind
erosion and may save on your
fuel bill this winter, they also
help to reduce seasonal surface
water run-off and therefore act
Tte,,,T9,rnb4;11encting..;
Other benefits are that
woodlots and swamps serve as
natural reservoirs to provide
water for Springs and wells,
and woodlots often provide
good habitat for desirable
wildlife.
In addition to providing
wood for home use, woodlots
are actually cash producers in
that logs and lumber products
and maple syrup products have
a good market value.
Next time, Rocky will offer
hints on how to gain these
benefits through protection of
your woodlot.

The Clinton Environmental
Improvement Committee held
an open meeting Monday night
in the Agricultural board room.
Over twenty people were
present.
In his opening remarks, Ken
Flett, chairman, emphasized
that all meetings of environ-
mental committees are open to
everyone,
The present meeting, Mr,
' Flett continued, had been
called to clarify the structure of
all committees, and to give
guidelines and goals to the sub,
committees.
The purpose of the Action
Committee, he said, was to
plan, organize and give some
control through communication
to the sub-committees. Mem-
bers of the Action Committee
are: Mr. Flett, chairman; Rita
Ryan, vice-chairman; Clarence
Denomme, chairman Clinton
Merchants' Association; and
Gordon Duern, interior and ar-
chitectural designer.
Mr. Flett said that sub-
committees are not limited to
people already members, and
suggested that chairmen could
do well to ask senior citizens
who have many years of varied
experience to help in this
volunteer effort. Nor are sub-
committees to be confined to
the suggested guidelines, The
more ideas submitted, the bet-
ter. Some member of the Action
Committee will attend each
sub-committee meeting.
Mr. Denomme reported that
all merchants had been sent a
letter informing them that Mr,
Duern would make designs for
them, free of charge, on
request. So far, about' ten mer-
chants have replied favorably,
designs have been made, and
shown to the merchants.
Both Mr. Denomme and Mr.
Duern would like to see some
work done before any more
sketches are made, but there
have been contractors' delays,
Mr. Denomme believes that at
least two applications for
building permits have already
been made.
Mr. Duern said that being an
amateur should not deter
anyone from taking part:
"We'll find out as we go along.
This is not a leave-it-up-to-
your,neighbour project, It's a
team show."
Nick Hall, of the Huron
County Planning Dept., who
has been active on the Goderich
renewal project, stated that
simplicity was best, A crisp, 20-
page outline and a plan was ef,
fective, result.wise, when the'
time came to ask for public
funds. A partnership between
individuals and business was
necessary before approaching
any government levels, from
Town Council to Federal, he
said.
Mr, Plett set a tentative date
of Thursday, October 17th, for
the next general committee
meeting.
By then it is expected that all
chairmen of sub-committees
will hold meetings, the results
of which are to be recorded and
presented to the general
meeting.
Sub-committees set up so far
are: pollution, census, public
relations, traffic and parking,
funds and grants,, and hor-
ticultural copies of the
suggested areas of research are
available.
If you are 'interested in
taking part in any of these com-
mittees telephone either Ken
