CALLAN IS COMING
CALLAN, the "different" spy
series which debuts this Fall On the
Global Television Network, (Sun-
day, 10:00 p.m.} has surprised even
its creators with its enormous suc-
cess in Britain. When the hero had
been shot and apparently left for
dead at the end of one series,
Thames Television was over-
whelmed with viewer demands that
he be brought back to life. The
result was that, like one of his
distinguished fictional crime-
fighting predecessors Sherlock
Holmes, he was resuscitated to fight
another day.
CALLAN is a realistic and absor-'
bing espionage series, starring Ed-
ward Woodward in the title role of
an unusual and very human spy. He
is the antithesis of James Bond and
his creation owes more to John le
Carre's "The Spy Who Came in
From the Cold" than to Ian
Fleming, Whereas James Bond was
tall, suave, well-educated and
sophisticated, David Callan is of
middle height, dresses in rumpled
suits, left school early and joined
the Army as a corporal and is a
man of unexceptional tastes and
habit (The Bondian hero was born
out of a society of "haves" and
"have nots" at a time when many
people had fantasies of being rich
and powerful. In today's more
egalitarian society the affluence or
poverty of a hero assumes less im-
portance and the character's ideals
and relationships to others are of
niore interest,
Callan is a rebel, and has always
been one from his Army days when
he physically attacked his
sergeants. He rebels against his boss
—the all-powerful Head of Depart-
ment (played by Michael Goodliffe)
and sometimes openly contradicts
his orders. He is an "insubordinate
subordinate" who refuses blindly to
early out orders "like a bloody zom-
bie". In spite of this side of his
character, however, Callan is not
unemotional, but has his loves, his
hates and his ideals — he is a very
human hero beneath his cynical ex-
terior.
The stories deal with top-level
espionage involving the U.S.S.R. S
KGB ' and the British Special
Branch, and Callan finds himself in
some very difficult situations — •
such as the time when he ends up in
an enemy prison, and then he is
fired for inefficiency after being
released from hospital.
He sees every side of life and
death, espionage and counter-
espionage. The series attempts to
use action and dialogue in such a
way that very little on-screen
violence is necessary.

One of Global's biggest hits of its
launch season, THE GREAT
DEBATE, will be back this fall,
starting its new season on Thur-
sday, September 12 at 8:30 p.m.
Pierre Berton is the moderator
and host for the show, which
presents two internationally known
figures in debate on controversial
issues. The subjects last season
were varied ... Malcolm Muggeridge
and Charles Templeton debated on
"That man cannot live withoilt
God;" Jeremy Thorpe and Eugene
McCarthy battled over the subject
of the respective merits of the
parliamentary and the presidential
systems of government; William F.
Buckley and Rene Levesque con-
sidered the question of whether
there should be graduated income
tax. Not all topics were so serious;
glamorous Diana Dors and author
Jim Moran debated "That marriage
is obsolete" and Wendy Robin and
psychologist Dr. Albert Ellis
discussed the merits of virginity.
The show that had the largest
audience, however, was the debate
between Erich Von Daniken and
Professor Tringham on the subject
of Von Daniken's book '"Chariots of
the Gods?"
This season THE GREAT
DEBATE will continue to present
interesting and stimulating debates.
The tonic scheduled to open the new'
career, and now he is a household
name and his face is familiar to
millions. His first break came when
he played the lead in the stage play
"The Rattle of a Simple Man" in
London and New York. Then came
a lean period when things did not
move easily for him. He consistently
turned down parts that he felt were
not right for him, although it would
have meant money in the bank and
more security. Then came "Callan"
and instant stardom in Britain
which he will doubtless achieve in
Canada when the series gets under
way.
season is "That bilingualism is un-
workable." The guests will be
Jacques Perizeau, Professor of
Economics at the University of
Montreal and a member of the
Parti Quebecois, and George.
Springate, a Liberal member of the
Quebec National Assembly who is
currently suspended from the
caucus for voting against Bill C-22
on the French language.
THE GREAT DEBATE is
produced by Elsa Franklin.
