"David lost," people said as they wandered in and out of the Huron-Middlesex New Democractic Party headquar- ters, the home of Shirley Weary, a defeated NDP can- didate 'in Monday night's federal election. It was announ- ced on television that, NDP leader David Lewis lost in his home riding. Mrs, Weary was talking to someone on the telephone. "A tremendous loss to our party, a tremendous loss to the whole country." Nobody kept track of how many people visited Mrs. Weary's home but for the first two hours after the election returns started coming in via the television for national results and the telephone for Goderich results, the living room was full of people sipping punch. The NDP candidate kept a small electronic calculator near her. When riding returns 'ap- peared 'on the television from polling stations outside of Goderich she calculated her percentage of the popular vote, It was some of the best news the ND? supporters heard all night. Mrs, Weary was main- taining the percentage she won in the 1972 election. They heard what they con- sidered other good news, The NDP won a seat in Nova Scotia. ' As the Ontario results were broadcast into the livingroom, they watched the television dejectedly as one NDP can- didate after another was defeated including David Lewis their leader. The Manitoba results flashed on the screen. "Fifteen stinking seats," someone said. Mrs. Weary asked him in a good natured manner, to be quiet. "I can't. stand to be anymore depressed," she, said with a grim smile. At 10:10 p.m. the scene brightened for a few minutes. The NDP-"eiding association drew.'ffliel Nitinuing ticket for a rafflectheY held, tib rdige:fifioney `a? for Mrs. Weary's campaign. Edward Vincent, 45 Britan- nia Rd. won, a 200 pound pig. Apparently people were satisfied with the winner as they said he needed the prize which would be butchered and delivered to him next week: Just before 11:00 dismay over national standings of the NDP, "Keep the faith. B.C. isn',t in yet," Mrs, Weary said in an- ticipation of the British Colum- bia returns, The televiSion station swil, died from the national election results to the 'Western Ontario tallies. At 11.130 p.m. the standings in •Huron4liddlesex were; Robert McKinley, 17,204, -John- Lyndon 10,939- and Shirley Weary, 1,752. What makes summer holidays particularly rewarding for some people are, the oppor- tunities for family reunions both large and small., It is especially heartwarming to have visits from ones "own folk" and especially when fang distances make -frequent. drop-ins virtually impossible„, Quite a number of local townsfolk have been having out-of-town visitors. .
