United Church
Conference
of UWO
The London Conference, of
the United Church of Canada,
representing South-Western
Ontario and Algoma, held its
50th annual meeting at the
University of Western Ontario
last week, from Tuesday to
Thursday.
This year's president, Rev.
Fred Faist, of St. John's
Church, Stratford, told the 550
plus delegates to keep the
theme of the "Open Hand"
alive and their hands open for
the greater challenges of their
50th anniversary year. He said
that it had been thrilling to
travel throughout the Con-
ference speaking and trying to
meet the needs of United
Church people. In a later inter-
view he commented, "This is
Our anniversary year, and we
are going, to celebrate, and it
seems to me that one of the
ways of celebrating is to share
what we have with others."
Rev. Feist, retires as
President this year, During the
year he said that he had tried
to convey to ministers of the
Conference that the Church has
a serious faith problem. "What
we need to do is to explore the
depth of our own uncertainty
and search for stronger foun-
dations." He spoke of the need
for leadership and total in-
volvement among the clergy
and laity.
Thus he was very much in
favor of a resolution passed on
Wednesday, which called for
the proclaiming of the coming
Conference year as one of
"Celebration and Witness".
The theme speaker for the
Conference was Rev. Wilbur K.
Howard. It was announced at
Conference that he is a can-
didate for the Moderator of the
United Church. If elected he
will be the first negro cleric to
hold such a position. At
present, he is minister of Em-
manuel United Church, Ot-
tawa, and he has previously
held many key Church
positions. In his first address,
at an evening of Celebration in
Alumni Hall, he told the
delegates that "the Church
today is on trial." It thus needs
to come alive and-come out of
its corner,a corner in which the
world has pushed it.
In his second address, Dr.
Howard who has a gift of
speaking in layman's language,
began by noting that, "I knew a
man once who intended to
procrastinate but never got
around to it,"
His final theme address was
delivered at the Ordination
ServiCe in Metropolitan United
Church, London. Six persons
were ordained into the
Ministry of the United Church,
one of whom was a woman, one
a grandfather, and 2 from Vic-
toria Ave, United Church
Chatham.
Two local choirs, the
Belgrave Men's Chorus, and
the Senior Choir of St. John's
United Church, Stratford, gave
stirring performances at an
evening of "Musical
Celebration" held in Alumni
Hall on Tuesday evening. The
Rev. John Roberts, leader of
the men's chorus, also par-
ticipated in a presentation on
evangelism on Wednesday
morning. He said, in one of
seven video tape recording
shown to delegates, that
evangelism ought to be the
ongoing work of the whole
Church; it is not just for special
occasions, or something in-
volving only special people. At
the close of this session
c:eiegates passed the motion
proclaiming that the coming
year be one of "Celebration and
Witness." Each local church
will be asked to develop its own
methods of implementing this
resolution.
Rev. David Stone, research
Officer for the United Church,
released copies of the 1974
Year Book, announced that for
the first time in 10 years,
church membership, Sunday
School enrollment, and other
statistics are beginning to level
off. In a decade that saw Oar-
Ming decreases, Mr. Stone said
he Was happy to now report
some increases. There are more
adult groups and 35 more can-
didates for the ministry,
The 59.year story of London
Conference was told in exciting
fashion at a multi-media
presentation on Wednesday
evening. It was hosted and
produced by Mr. Ev Smith,
Director of CoMinunications
and Stewardship a Conference.
He and his puppet friend,
"Salty", narrated this
historical look, at Conference
