Stan McDonald last Sunday, Miss Edythe Beacom conducted the service, assisted by the ladies of the church. Greeting into the sanctuary were Earl Gaunt and Harry Snell, while the ushers were Edward ,Riley, Darrell Shobbrook, and Tom and Ken Pollard:' The unison reading was lead by Mrs. Ross Lovett, and the scripture lessons were read by Mrs. Ken Scott, and Miss Dorothy Little. Prayer was lead by Mrs. Walter Reid, The choir anthem was "Father Almighty" with Mrs, Gordon Shobbrook taking the solo part. The children's story,. "Prac- ticing the music of Kindness" was given by Mrs. W.L. Whyte. The message was "Jesus Calls his disciples," given by Mrs. Edwin -Wood. They discussed notes on hair care and skin care and decided that Debbie Wallace be By Jim Fitzgerald Part of the history of Goderich Township, and a man considered an institution in the area for nearly half a century, Daniel Edward (Danny) Glid- den of 176 Ontario Street. in Clinton, died at his home sud- denly last Wednesday, April 24, 1974. He was 73. Well-known .. among area residents, Mr. Glidden, along with his wife Maizie ran the Holmesville general store for 43 years and served two generations of people in the Township. He was born in Goderich Township on December 1, 1900, a son of the late Daniel Glid- den and Mary Cornish. He at- tended schools in the Township and on March 31, 1926, he married Maizie Walters in Benmiller. She survives him. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Holmesville where they opened their general store that literally carried everything from soup to nuts. Mr. Glidden became somewhat of a legend in the township, as every week for 30 years, he and his wife and family would load up his small truck with every kind of thing imaginable and he would drive the township sideroads selling his merchandise to farmers, their wives and children. Nearly two generations of children in the area can recall With nostalgia the excitement they felt when they saw the cloud of dust that signalled Danny's weekly visit down their sideroad. Saun- dercock, assisted by Pauline Adrie. Corsages were pinned on Kathleen, her mother, Mrs. Jim McEwing her grandmother Mrs, George Marshall and the groom's mother, Mrs. William Chambers. A lucky draw was won by Mrs. Gourley, Lynn Peck read an address to Kathleen and gifts were presented by Janette and Jacqueline Johnston. Kathleen thanked all for the gifts and those who sponsored the shower and invited all to see her gifts on May 6th and 7th. Lunch was then served. Personals Sympathy is extended to the family of Bert Hunking, who passed away last Thursday in Victoria Hospital, London. He was 80 years-old. Friends will be pleased to know that Gordon Howatt returned' home from University Hospital in London. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Norman Alexander on the birth of their granddaughter, Tammy Elaine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Cousineau of Sault Ste. Marie. The baby was born on February 15th. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Fothergill and - family attended a celebration for the later's parents last Sunday on the oc- casion of.Mr. and Mrs. Colonel younger set would run barefoot across several fields of stubble to catch him and spend their five or ten cent allowance on a candy bar or bag of raisins. In a recent interview, Mr. Glidden said he couldn't recall having a bad word with anybody in his 43 years of business. The Gliddens sold the 'store in 1969 and moved to Clinton. He 'was a member of Holmesville United Church. Besides his wife, he is sur- vived by two daughters, Mrs. Nelson (Eileen) _Brown of Detroit and Mrs. Frank (Marie) Lawson of London; two grand- children, Lynn and Douglas Lawson of London; and one brother, Mel Glidden of Huron- view. Funeral services were held from the Ball Funeral Home in Clinton on Friday April 26 with Rev. John Oestreicher in charge. Burial was in Clinton Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bob Elliott, Walter Forbes, Harry Cud- .more, Edward Grigg, Warren Gibbings and Jack Yeo. Flowerbearers were Orville Blake, Aaron Fisher and Raymond Whitmore. Marks' 49th wedding anniver- sary, Thirty-two persons en- joyed a smorgasbord dinner at the Banton Place in Palmer- ston, after which, they returned to the home of Mr. and Mrs, Glen Bender of RR 2, Palmer- ston for the evening, Mr, and Mrs. Glen Carter honored their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Armstrong on the oc- casion of their 49th wedding anniversary last Sunday, Present at the turkey dinner were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wagner of Auburn, Miss Cathy Carter of Stratford Hospital, Mr, Marc Roberts of Waterloo, Larry Coleen and Mr. George Carter. Mrs, Bert Brunsdon returned home on Wednesday from spen- ding the past two and a half weeks with her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Holdvyay of Dallas, Texas, Mrs. Laura Saundercock spent a few days last week with her niece Mr. and Mrs. Perc McBride of Carlow. Mrs, Gladys Jickling of Provost, Alberta, daughter of the late Mr, and Mrs, Bert Ferris, is visiting with Taylor and Ferris relatives. Mr, and Mrs. Colin Paterson of London spent the weekend with her parents, Mr, and Mrs. Robert Burns, Mr. and Mrs, Wayne Peck of London spent the weekend with her parents, Mr, and Mrs. Cliff Saundercock. Mr. Stanley Lyon and Mr, and Mrs, Harry Durnin visited on Sunday with her nephew, Mr, and Mrs. Elwin Kerslake of Woodham. Sunday dinner guests with Mr. and Mrs. Bert Shobbrook were Mrs. Maude Radford, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Crawford of Blyth and Mrs, Laura Saunder- cock.
