Letter from the editor
It was a pleasure to work on this special souvenir edition
celebrating the 60th Anniversay of the Clinton Public Utilities
Commission.
But editing and writing copy for this special edition is en-
tirely different than the normal duties of writing and editing
for the News-Record.
Months and years, of research goes into an'edition such as
this, and the lion's share, if not all of the credit, must go to
Jabez Rands of Clinton. He has worked tirelessly compiling,
researching, following leads, and finally writing the history of
hydro, water and sewage in Clinton. Without him, this edition
wouldn't have come out. He worked diligently through illness
and grief to get' the job done and showed inspiration when
many of us had none,
Special thanks 'should also go to Professor James Scott of
Seaforth who edited Jabez Rands original hydro manuscript
and to Gus Boussey, manager of the Clinton. Public Utilities
who has over the years collected old pictures, news stories and
showed so much patience with our constant questions and
inquiries.
And last but not least, thanks to all the advertisers who have
purchased space in this edition, and hence have paid for the
cost of producing it. Without them there also could have been
no edition.
We hope that next year with Clinton's Centennial, we can
produce another souvenir edition that will outline, as this one
has, the history of Clinton, only on a much broader scale.
With great thanks,
James Fitzgerald,
Editor.
Most of Clinton's water system is buried deep in the
ground where it delivers water to individual homes and
businesses throughout the year. (News-Record photo)
CLINTON NEWS-RECORD, THURSDAY, MARCH 28, 1974-17A
Water best
in district
The Clinton PUC's boast
about Clinton's water being
one of the best in the province
is not without solid foundation.
An unlimited supply is
available from artesian deep
wells which are over 300 feet
deep. The water is so clean
that it needs no filtration, no
chlorination and in fact, con-
sistently tests zero for foreign
bacteria, according to the
ministry of health.
The water has a natural
fluoride in it, just enough that
local dentists see it as a major
factor in preventing tooth
decay.
The Clinton system is
capable of pumping over two
million gallons of water a day
and features a modern stand-
pipe for backup supply. As
well, the PUC has a diesel
generator that can produce
more than enough power to run
the water pumps should the
hydro fail, A compensating
valve assures a constant 65
pound pressure.
Even better news for the
consumer is that of 300
municipalities compared in the
province of Ontario, Clinton
was in the bottom five for
having the cheapest water
rates.
But just like a human,
nobody is perfect. Clinton also
has one of the hardest waters
in the area.
