The Clinton sewerage system
has been recently renovated,
updated and is now said to be
one of the best in this part of
the province. '
Because many of Clinton's
storm sewers are hooked up to
the sanitary sewers, • a great
deal of rain water went into
Clinton's older sewage plant,
which was built in 1947. At
peak run-off periods, the system
became so overloaded that raw
sewage had to be dumped into
the Bayfield River.
So in 1968 the Town was or-
dered to clean up the raw
sewage either by expanding the
present plant or by building a
complete new storm sewer
system to serve that part of
town where storms were
hooked up to sanitaries. Expan-
ding the sewage plant was by
far the cheapest alternative.
The $800,000 expansion is
just about complete and is now
processing Clinton's sewage. It
features an innovative lagoon
holding system using a special
rubber liner and it also has
Water rates
very , cheap
Clintonians pay about 30
cents for every 1,000 gallons of
water they use. This works out
to about 20 cents per 100 cubic
feet, one of the cheapest rates
in Ontario.
Because the Clinton Public
Utilities Commission needs a
certain amount of revenue
every year to keep up the water
system, a minimum rate of $1 a
month is charged to home
owners. According to Clinton
PUC records, nearly 33 percent
of people in Clinton don't use
the minimum amount of water
each month.
special sand and anthracite
coal filters.
The plant will be officially
opened on June 26 and local
citizens will have a chance at
that time to tour the modern
facilities.
Although many citizens have
complained about the doubling
of their sewage surcharge this
year, the PUC and the town
council had little choice, and in,
future years, their decision• on
the sewage plant expansion and
subsequent increase in rates
will be viewed as a good one.
Without the plant increase, no
more housing could have been
buijt and no more industry
would have been allowed to
locate in town, a sure recipe for
a dismal future.
Even if the power should fall, Clinton will always have plenty of water for fire fighting and
household use because of this stand-by diesel electric generator that supplies power to run
the Town's water pumps. Manager Gus Boussey stands beside it. (News-Record photo)
