Do you, remember?
BY JABEZ RANDS '
(As part of Clinton's upcoming Centennial celebrations,
Jabez Rands of Clinton is writing a weekly column about the
history of the town.)
Do you remember when there was a planing mill on
Huron Street?
In the early 1860s, Mr. Henry Stevens had a planing mill
on the corner of Huron and North Streets where Mrs. Bridle
has a house now. In early 1869, Mr. Stevens built a new and
more up-to-date mill across the street on the northwest cor-
ner of Huron and Shipley Streets, where the large frame
apartment house is now.
In the later part of 1869, Mr. Stevens was selling one inch
pine lumber planed on one side for $2 per 1,000 board feet
and tongue and groove flooring for $3.50 per 1,000 board
feet. It was known as the Clinton Planing Mill.
About the middle of the 1870s, he sold this mill to a firm
by the name of McCartney, Thompson and Scott. The mill
as important as it supplied Clinton's biggest and oldest in-
ustry, the Doherty Organ Company.
The organ company in some of its ewly years of operation
rom about 1876 to 1879 rented the use of the power •and the
ood working machinery from the planing mill to do , the
achine work on their organ cases.
In a statement made by William Doherty to the Clinton
ew Era in January of 1900, Mr. Doherty said that for some
ime until they had their own machines, the Organ Factory
sed the planing mill's power and machinery.
By 1883, the planing mill seemed to disappear and there
as a blacksmith's shop in its place.
